    The Blue Mosque
    by mansionion
The most recogniseable landmark of Shah Alam, the Sultan Salahuddin Abdul Aziz Shah mosque is one of the most beautiful buildings in the country. It is also known as "The Blue Mosque of the East" in reference to the Blue Mosque in Turkey.

Its four minarets, at 142.3 meters are among the tallest in the world. Its graceful blue dome is one of the largest of its kind (hence the nickname the Blue Mosque). The dome's computer-designed lighting system creates the illusion of being in the desert on a star-filled night inside the mosque.

Decorative Islamic calligraphy enhances the dome and main prayer-hall, while the overall architecture integrates ethnic Malay, Arabic and modern design elements. The mosque is a holy place of superlatives that can accommodate about 24,000 worshippers at one time.

The Sultan Salahuddin Abdul Aziz Shah Mosque or simple "the Blue Mosque" is situated in the heart of Shah Alam. It is call the Blue Mosque because of its colour blue on the roof of the mosque. The Mosque is built on a 14.6 hectare land of green and there's a lake nearby. It was commissioned in 1980s, completed in 1988, and is the largest mosque in Malaysia and South East Asia.

The Blue mosque is most magnificent when captured as night as the lightings enhance the structures and the colors of the mosque (see night pic of mosque attached). Its minarets at 142.3 metres, were once the tallest in the world. (lost it mark to Hasan II Mosque in Casablanca). The blue dome is also one of the biggest of its kind. The main prayer hall is vast and can accomodate at least 24,000 worshippers. The walls and the roof are beautifully adorned with superbly-crafted motifs. Decorative Islamic calligraphy enhaces the dome and main prayer hall, while the overall architecture integrates Malay and Moorish design elements. The mosque's pulpit has been executed in carved timber, a masterpiece of local craftsmen from the state of Kelantan. The splendid chandelier was contributed by the late Sultan of Selangor. The domes and minarets are the architectural splendour of the Mosque.

Most of the time you are not allowed to enter the mosque unless you are a Muslim. There are special occasions where visitiors are allowed to go into the compounds of the Mosque but not into the prayer rooms unless you are a Muslim. To get the timing of visit, need to check with the Tourist Information Centre.

Shah Alam Lake Gardens is a vast man-made lake in the town centre. It is located along Dato Menteri Road and Persiaran Masjid Road. It is a popular spot for joggers and runners and is pretty crowded on weekdends as most families will bring their children there either during the early morning or the evening. The playground has lots of playthings for the children. There are a lot of sheds for you to sit and even have picnics. There is also a huge pond where you can feed the fishes and the tortises . It is the site of annual events such as the International Boat Show and the Selangor Orchid Exhibition. Picnic area dot this well-kept parkland and a floating seafood restaurant stands on the fringes of the lakes.

See more pictures attached, one on the night scene, beautiful!

Dataran Shah Alam is in fact a Square where people "lepak" (Malay word for "hang-out"). It is situated near to the Tourist Information Centre and the Wisma MBSA. This a favourite place for youngsters to hang out , especially during the weekends. The Square is near to the shopping malls and to many bistros and fast food outlets. The are "amphitheatre" seats for you to relax and there is a fountain to enhance the ambience. At night, many will sit at these seats after having their dinner at the nearby eateries.

During the National Day, 31st August every year, celebrations and parades will be held here. The road will be then closed for the function.

Being build in such a beautiful design. It is fully air conditioned and tap water for cleansing is using sensor electronically.

For non-muslim, you may also visit the mosque but in proper clothing.

Another shopping mall here and among the big one is the Plaza Alam Sentral. Lots of shops and restaurants are here and this is a total packed mall indeed. Almost all of the available spaces are occupied with kiosk. During my visit, a lot of people are inside this mall either to do shopping or just hanging around.

3rd Floor of this mall is being dedicated to IT related stuffs and wireless internet is also available here. There is a music studio here also to be rented at the 3rd Floor.

I also noticed that this mall is not really that wide. Thru my humble view, this mall is better than PKNS Complex.

This complex is the oldest established shopping arcade here in Shah Alam. The shops are only located at the 1st and 2nd Floor selling varieties of items.

Personally, I think that this place is suitable to be visited by the local and for foreigner that are into local product such as local clothings, ‘tudung’ or scarf, malay biscuits etc. Nevertheless there are also shops selling other stuff other than the local interest items but there are not many.

This shopping mall is the best I think in terms of structures and setup. Lots of shops and restaurants available here and those are good one even.

The experience here is more relaxing and good space for one to walk along, not as narrow as the PKNS Complex and Plaza Alam Sentral.

The plaza is also clean and well organized.

  • Shah Alam, the capital of Selangor, is located about 30 km west of Kuala Lumpur. Its skyline is dominated by the huge, blue aluminum dome of the State Mosque, i.e., Masjid Sultan Salahuddin Abdul Aziz Shah. This dome is reputed to be the largest of its kind in the world. This mosque allows 16,000 muslim to pray, beside providing sraying space, it has library, conference hall, instituition study room, and guess hall.

  • Situated at the Shah Alam Lake Gardens, the Shah Alam Gallery exhibits a wide collection of art, local handicraft and fabrics for viewing and for sale.

Sometimes, the UiTM students from the Arts & Design Faculty will display some of their works here and visitors could buy some of the arts at a bargain of the normal price.
