Would like to suggest buying Malaysian pewter if you are considering getting a special souvenir for yourself or as a gift to someone else. Malaysia was once the world largest producer of tin. Pewter companies like Royal Selangor is world famous. There are alsoother smaller companies with more competitive prices like Penang Pewter, etc. I have bought pewter items like tourist scenes, picture frames, beer mugs, vases and often appreciated because they are unique. This is truly a Malaysian handicraft and favourite past time as well esp. in rural areas. Unlike normal kite, the Wau can be as big as 2.5 metres for wing span and height measuring up to 3.5 metres. Now thats giant kite ! But dont worries you can buy miniature ones as souveniers. Why its called Wau ? It is called 'Wau' because the shape of its wing is similar to an Arabic letter (pronounced "wow"). The making of Wau similar In making a wau, bamboo is used for the frame. The bamboo is split and soaked in mud for two weeks. This prevents the bamboo from being attacked by weevils as well as makes it more flexible. The bamboo splits are used to produce a complex but lightweight frame, tested with one layer of paper and making alterations accordingly to make sure the kite is structurally sound. The patterns are then meticulously cut from rice-paper and glued on piece by piece to form intricate motif Types of Wau There are various types of wau such as wau kuching (cat kite), wau merak (peacock kite), and wau bulan (moon kite). Each wau also comes with a different design and size Leave a Comment Theme: Local CraftDirections: Mainly in Kelantan and Terengganu but the souvenier size you can get it in most handicratf shops. |

I had converted this decorative bubu into a lamp which can be easily place on any tabletop or any corner of the room. I stumbled over this miniature bubu (fish trap) on my last trip to Kuching (hope to feature Kuching page in near future). It?s certainly a great buy & perfectly satisfies after the conversion.

This is an old wet market for fresh meat and vegetables that is converted into modern two storey shopping gallery for Malaysian handi craft. You can see also local artists at work selling their paintings and wares and occasional cultural performances. So great place to shop for T-shirts, batik cloth, wayang kulit (traditional shadow-play) masks, "antiques", Hindu and Chinese deities statutes, Orang Asli carvings and Nonya designs. There are also a variety of eating places. It is next to the river bank of Klang river and a stone's throw to Chinatown Petaling Street.
