Any Pewter Shop: Buying Malaysian Pewter

by SLLiew

Would like to suggest buying Malaysian pewter if you are considering getting a special souvenir for yourself or as a gift to someone else. Malaysia was once the world largest producer of tin. Pewter companies like Royal Selangor is world famous. There are alsoother smaller companies with more competitive prices like Penang Pewter, etc. I have bought pewter items like tourist scenes, picture frames, beer mugs, vases and often appreciated because they are unique.

Petaling Street Stalls: Happy shopping and bargaining

by SLLiew

Petaling Street is a popular local and tourists destination for getting bargains. All kinds of products are sold and you need a sharp eye and sharp tongue to bargain too.Fun to stroll under the roof covered pedestrian street. There are many small food stalls to snack in between your shopping. It is located within walking distance from Pudu Raya bus station and so if you have waiting time for the bus, it will fit into your schedule.A place not to be missed if you are coming to KL for the first time.

Central Market: Buying local art and craft

by SLLiew

This is an old wet market for fresh meat and vegetables that is converted into modern two storey shopping gallery for Malaysian handi craft. You can see also local artists at work selling their paintings and wares and occasional cultural performances. So great place to shop for T-shirts, batik cloth, wayang kulit (traditional shadow-play) masks, "antiques", Hindu and Chinese deities statutes, Orang Asli carvings and Nonya designs. There are also a variety of eating places. It is next to the river bank of Klang river and a stone's throw to Chinatown Petaling Street.

Jonker Street: Malacca

by keeweechic

Jonker Street as it was known, is now called Jalan Hang Jebat. This is the place to go if you are antique shopping or just looking for some good bargains. –You can find authentic artefacts and relics. Some of these are collectibles and can date back as far back as 300 years. Singaporeans and expats from Singapore would travel to Malacca to collect bargains which were at great prices compared to Singapore.

Penan tribe longhouse visit: Jungle shopping

You can buy weaved baskets and bracelets of Penan tribes who have been relocated to live a long house. Quite a nice unique design for souvenir as you cannot take back the protected fauna and flora and rocks of Mulu Caves National Park.

shoppers paradise

I found shopping for clothes in kul lumpur extremely cheap.. It didnt matter where I went the bargains were there to be had.. The only down side would be the sizing is more geared to the asian market.. Try before you buy because you might be buying something that wont fit. shoes, bags and clothing is what you should look for in malaysia..

'knock offs' (fake designer items)

by Robin922

As for the 'knock offs' (fake designer items), they can be fun, many look nice, but you get what you pay for. The quality isn't there. Also don't forget that many countries won't let you bring them in. You might get by playing ignorance for a purse and watch, but buying a half dozen watches for your friends might get you busted. Watches can be bought for as little as 10RM however some won't even work long enough to get home. The more expeicve ones 60RM are more of the quality you would buy in a discount store. The 200RM ones appear to be of much better quality, however are a far cry for the brand name quality.Handbags are another popular item, a small clutch may only cost 20RM will a large leather bag will cost up to 60RM.For the person who is always loosing their sunglasses, this is your chance to look cool for a few days. The average price will be 20 to 25RM.CDs & DVDs, some are great...

Buying your handcrafted items

by Robin922

While Melacca was cheaper, now that they have moved the booths to a building the prices have risen to the prices at Central Market in KL.Like in most where, the better the location, the higher the prices. Deals can be found off the beaten path, however if you don't want to spend a lot of time shopping Central Market is convenient one stop shopping.Handcrafts are a great bargain, however if you trip includes Thailand you will find much better deals there. The flip side is, if you plan to go to Singapore, Malaysia will often offer the better deals. Wood, hand dyed fabrics and assorted rustic items made from local palm are your best buys. For high end crafts such as pewter and silk I've written separate tips.

Not everything is cheaper!

by Robin922

While many good bargains can be found, you need to do you homework before you start shopping for particular items. For Europeans electronics may be a great deal, however for the average American the average price higher than home.

Kuala Lumpur - KLCC Suria (Petronas Towers)

by ant1606

A visit to Kuala Lumpur will most likely end up to Petronas Towers. Here is the elegant KLCC Suria multilevel shopping mall, which like most malls in the world is not only a place for shopping but also a meeting place and strolling heaven in its air conditioned environment. A food court offers a wide variety of western and Malay, Chinese and Indian delicious dishes. Reasonable prices and very clean premises.
