Jothy's Banana Leaf Restaurant: Banana leaf food
  • Tip Rating:
  • Satisfaction:
  • For a very good lunch stop by Jothy's Banana Leaf Restaurant.
They have very good curries and the restaurant is air conditioned.
It is located in the Api-Api center.
Around the corner from the restaurant is a good internet cafe. I don't remember the name but you will see the sign INTERNET

SEDCO open-air restaurants & stalls: Al fresco, Fresh Seafood AT SEDCO
  • Tip Rating:
  • Satisfaction:
  • My original 2004 tip was updated in July 2006

During this business trip, I had quite a few alternatives but chose instead to have dinner at SEDCO two nights in a row. Why? Because in my opinion, it continues to offer the best value for your money. There are more swanky places in KK now, for example by the KK Waterfront, but SEDCO continues to be great because of three reasons:
    * Reasonable Pricing,
    * Good Variety of seafood that is cooked to perfection,
    * Pleasant surroundings-not fancy, but not too down market either.

Here's my original tip written in 2004
There are 4-5 restaurants & stalls serving fresh seafood at SEDCO. Prices were reasonable (as compared to Kuala Lumpur). The seafood here is very fresh, there are a number of "exotic" varieties that I've not seen in other parts of Malaysia.

As the food is still swimming in tanks, you just know that they're fresh!
And of course, the variety makes it, oh so difficult to make your choice !

We selected the largest restaurant, and spent RM169 for a dinner for 3 persons.which I found to be very good value.

There is no extra charge for the cooking.

We had live red lobster cooked in 2 styles-we chose tom yam soup for the lobster head and it was piquant and delicious, and for the tail, we chose it to be fried with butter-coconut - it was a tad too sweet and heavy and masked the freshness somewhat), BBQ large prawns, elephant tusk clams, some steamed rice and soft drinks).

So, what's new? There are fewer stalls now, and the square block is practically dominated by 2 larger restaurants. The price is almost the same at both. The cooking was comparable-both delicious. Differences are subtle- eg. one has red table cloths, the other bright yellow. Don't worry about rain-they have awnings that they can pull out or draw back as necessary.

Hint: Don't choose from the menu. Choose instead from the live / fresh seafood selection. Be bold & ask the price (it's charged by weight) before making your selection.

2004 visit "Elephant Tusk" clams - approx RM15 per plate, lightly steamed with garlic, it is delicious, a bit chewy, but oh, so yummy!

Barbeque large Prawns with chilli, served with tasty piquant home-made chilli sauce-ooh-la-la

Choose the lobster for a special treat, but if you want to taste the freshness, opt for it to be lightly steamed and not fried.

    July 2006 visit
Crabs-they come in RM25, 30 and RM40 a kilo. I chose the RM40 a kilo and had no regrets. The larger the crabs, the meatier and sweeter they are! 1 crab was approx 600-650 grams.
Can be cooked in different styles. I enjoyed the tangy butter sauce which brought out the sweetness of the crab flesh. (check out the size of those crab claws in my second pics)
Lobster-there were many varieties and prices. I had mine chopped into large chunks and fried with spring onions and ginger. Mmm, yummy!
Mini Geoduck - RM30 a kilo (see pics), minimum order-1 kilo. Steamed with garlic and shavings of birds eye chili-heavenly! Words cannot begin to describe this delicacy. The normal geoduck is very, very expensive, and KK is one of the few places that serve mini geoduck-which makes this dish affordable.

Ocean Seafood Village: Select live Seafood at the OCEAN restaurant
  • Tip Rating:
  • Satisfaction:
  • One of the largest seafood restaurants in Kota Kinabalu is Ocean Seafood Village. Located not far from the Promenade hotel, along KK's waterfront, it is popular amongst tourists and locals alike.

The restaurant can cater for large groups, but even smaller groups would not feel out of place here.

The staff are attentive and the service is quite good. They have tanks of live seafood from which you can choose and select what you want. If you don't wish to do this, you can also order off the menu-they have set menus and a la carte.

They have the manpower to deal with even larger groups, and the ambiance is quite good for formal occasions, and also suitable for a casual dinner with friends.

    Steamed Red Garoupa fish
Sabah vegetable fried with garlic & chilli
Large Prawns, lightly steamed. Peel it, and dip it in a sauce of your own choosing or why not eat it "as is" for the ultimate fresh seafood experience!

    Everything was fresh and delicious!

Update as at May 2008: They may have branches in Kudat and Miri but it seems that the KL branch has been closed.

    Chicken Wings
  • Tip Rating:
  • Satisfaction:
  • Roasted chicken wing is available in most of the night market in KK. You can get it in Filipino market for RM1. The price is cheaper than chicken wing sold in peninsular malaysia.

The bbq fish is not as nice as the chicken. The fish is usually not hot. They put it aside after bbq and never heat it up before sell it to you. If you are buying fish, remember to ask for heat up so that you wont get a dry cold fish.

Kampung Nelayan Seafood Restaurant: Don't Miss The Fresh Seafood! lol
  • Tip Rating:
  • Satisfaction:
  • Kampung Nelayan Seafood Restaurant is one of many seafood restaurants in Kota Kinabalu. However this has got to be my favorite. It’s a cozy place to be, you’re not just there to eat, but to have fun, socialize, or watch an entertaining show.

There is a cultural show every night. If you’d like to see this, you will sit outside and enjoy Sabah’s colorful traditional dances. You will also get a chance to participate in the show; which is always good fun to watch, and to laugh at ;)

If you prefer a quieter and private ambience, you can request for private rooms. They call it the VIP room. It is like a dining room and a living room in one; there are couches, television and Karaoke set, etc. You’ll also have your own private washroom.

Hinava (local food), pandan chicken, yam basket, chilli crabs, buttered lobster, Sabah vegetable, garlic scallop, black pepper ostrich meat.

    Rice Wine
  • Tip Rating:
  • Satisfaction:
  • When you visit the Monsopiad Cultural Village, the welcome drink will be this rice wine. The rice wine is poured into this small bamboo container. The bamboo container is freezed beforehand so that the wine is cold when served.

The rice wine is also available for sold. A mineral water bottle size costs RM12.

    Himompuka: Hinava
  • Tip Rating:
  • Satisfaction:
  • This is a local food recommended by the tourism board..

Hinava is a dish serving a kind of raw fish with some sauce, onion minced together. You cant really feel it is raw, but it is for sure sour-salty.

For a small bowl like this cost Rm1

Jothy's Banana Leaf Restaurant: Delicious Banana Leaf Indian Curry Food
  • Tip Rating:
  • Satisfaction:
  • Jothy's serves various South Indian dishes including banana leaf meals, fish head curry, dosas, etc. It is clean, cheap and (the food is) delicious.

Banana leaf all-you-can-eat meals. You get a mound of rice, papaddam, a veg side dish and hot/sour sambar ladled out of a stainless steel bucket. All for a few Ringets (4 RM when I visited).

"Chinese Kedai Kopi under Ang's Hotel"
  • Tip Rating:
  • Satisfaction:
  • "Chinese Kedai Kopi under Ang's Hotel", this is what mentioned in LP. Since we just stayed opposite the shop, we tried the dishes the first night we reached KK.

The orders some local food- char hor fun, fried noodle, fried rice, chicken wing with garlic etc. The food turned out to be very satisfying with all of us thumb-up.

The chicken wing is nice is you can eat with beer. The business time is on both morning and night. At night it can be very crowded.
