by yuet29 Monsopiad cultural village is not far from KK. If you seek advice for places to go in Sabah Tourism Board, there will probably recommend you to pay a visit there. Some people said, if you never go to Monsopiad, you cannot say yourself visited Sabah! =) For those who prefer culture than beaches or any other things, Monsopiad is a must. Monsopiad was a Kadazan warriors which was known as a head-hunting tribe 300 years ago. Kadazan is Sabah largest tribe. The cultural village is exactly the location of Monsopiad village 300 years ago. You will have chance to visit the house with spirits and 42 skulls taken down by Monsopiad. The entrance fee to Monsopiad is RM30 including guide, rice wine and cultural performance. Sometimes there is also local lunch served. Leave a Comment Directions: See the next Monsopiad tips

cultural dance by yuet29 Most people will take a tour package or charter a taxi there. If you insist to do it yourself, here is the way. 1. Go to the long distance bus terminal at Jalan Padang. Pass the terminal and there is a local bus station. Take bus number 13 with sign "Penampang". The bus takes less than 1/2 hours and costs rm1. 2. The bus to Penampang will drop you at "Donggongon". Where there is a big tamu (market) and you can shop shop there. 3. From Donggongon, take a mini bus to Monsopiad Cultural Village. The mini bus terminal is just opposite the library. Ask some one for direction to the library. The minibus in sabah is actually a 'van'. The van from the terminal to Monsopiad takes less than 1/2 hours and cost rm0.7 The return trip is the same. If you want to save all the trouble, you can also take the mini bus from Monsopiad for rm 15 for direct transfer to KK. Leave a Comment

Mangroves on Gaya Island by XenosUK We set off from the jetty at the Tanjung Aru hotel and a few minutes later we landed on Gaya, the biggest of the 5 islands in this Marine Park. On Gaya, we were given a guided walk through the rainforest and mangrove swamps, which took a couple of hours and I saw my first "wild" chameleon! We finished up on a beach, from where our boat picked us up and took us across to Sapi island. On Sapi, we spent about an hour snorkelling over the live coral and saw the most fabulous fish I've ever seen. A delicious bbq lunch was included and after lunch our guide took us to see the monitor lizards and macaques, then we went back to the beach for another snorkelling session. All in all a fantastic day out! Leave a Comment Address: Tunku Abdul Rahman Marine ParkDirections: Off the coast of Kota Kinabalu

Water chalets by Wild_Orchid The Tuanku Abdul Rahman park is a collection of islands not far from Kota Kinabalu town. The best thing is that they are really close by and are not futher than 30-40 minutes boat ride away. The islands are good for snorkeling, swimming and even scuba diving. Among them is Gayana island which can accommodate medium to large groups as it has water challets (see pics-replicated from their website) on the islands itself. This island is also where a famous HongKong action movie was shot in 2002. Visit the Marine Ecological Research Centre (entry is free) and observe their conservation efforts of rare species of shellfish and corals. In the touch-tank, you are encouraged to put your hands in to stroke a starfish and a seacucumber. I did touch them- it was strange but fun. The other unique aspect of this island is the nature pool where you can swim with the tropical fishes - the pool was not too well maintained and had lots of broken bits of coral in it, but it was still a fun experience with my snorkling gear on. Check out my tongue-in-cheek Warning/Danger tip regarding the nature pool. Beach Life by runwitme Pulau Manukan is one of the 5 islands in the Tunku Abdul Rahman Park which is 25 minutes away from Kota Kinabalu by speedboat. A conservation fee of RM 3 per pax will be charged upon arrival. The island has very clear waters and good venue for snorkelling, kayaking and swimming. The beach is somewhat rocky (laden with corals remnants), so beach barefoot jogging is an absolutely a no no. Snorkles and masks can be rented at a small fee from a sundry shop. There are some chalets if you want to spend more time in this beautiful island. I personally love the 1.5 km "jogging trail". The trail passes along cool lowland forest. Many species of birds can insect can be seen along the trail. Leave a Comment Directions: Go to the Kota Kinabalu Jetty and purchase tickets in the morning. Pick-up from the island is at 4:00pm. Early pick-up can be arranged with a fee.

Manan the Orangutan by XenosUK The Rasa Ria hotel has a nature sanctuary with 3 young orangutans (as at April 2004), ranging from 2 years to 6 years old. Visiting times are twice a day, mornings and afternoons, with the best one being in the afternoon when it's feeding time. Visitors are limited to about 30 per session, so it's necessary to book a day or two in advance. The entrance charge was 25 ringgits for hotel residents and 50 for non-residents whilst we were there, which we thought was a bargain. The rangers also organise daily jungle treks and birdwatching walks which are free and last about two hours. Boat to sapi by yuet29 I didnt manage to go to any of the manukan, sapi or tiga island. It needs a minimum of 8 person for the boat to go to any of these islands. By the time I reached the jetty, it was 2 o'clock in the afternoon. The person at the counter told me, there hasnt a person bought the boat ticket yet since 12 o'clock, so it may take me a few hours to wait for 8 persons. So I give up and go to another island- Gaya. The round trip boat fare for going to any of the island is RM14 and the last boat is at 5:30pm. Leave a Comment Directions: To go to the jetty, follow the Tun Fuad Stephen Road. The jetty to the islands is opposite the Korean Restaurant.

Tanjung Aru Beach is one of the popular hangouts for KK people. Traditionally, they used to come here for food (of course) such as: satay, coconut drink, beer, tidbits etc. but it has now become a bigger area for family gatherings; more facilities added and also eating places. There’s a seafood restaurant, cafés, a fastfood eatery, and a food court. There are also souvenir stalls, a reflexology centre, and a tattoo parlour! The beach itself isn’t that clean. Sadly it’s not really being taken care of. The KK City Hall do try their best at maintaining the beauty and cleanliness of this beach but unfortunately there are, still, irresponsible people that litter. There is a signboard at the beach that says ‘RM 500 fine for littering’ if I’m not mistaken but it is pretty much just a signboard. No enforcement going on. Tho locals as well as tourists still come here for the cool breeze and the beautiful sunset. It is not a suitable beach to do your sunbathing, you can do that at our nearby islands. At night, there are singing and dancing performances held here. For more pics of Tg Aru beach, check out my travelogue. Water Buffalo, Klias River, Sabah by XenosUK We wanted to see proboscis monkeys - and we did! We also saw macaques, water buffaloes, fireflies and dozens of wonderful birds which our guide, David, was an expert at spotting and identifying for us throughout the boat trip. We booked the trip through the travel agent at our hotel, but most travel agents in KK do a similar trip. We were staying at the Rasa Ria, which is about 30 minutes north of Kota Kinabalu and the trip cost us 230 ringgits each including dinner, but it's less if you are staying in KK itself. The drive from KK took about 2 hours, but was well worth the journey. The proboscis monkeys are very shy and difficult to photograph well, but we managed to get plenty of other photos of our trip. gayana island ecoresort by yuet29 Pulau Gaya is another choice of the islands near KK but is not in the national marine park list. On the island is actually a fishing village but the tourists have no chance to get in contact with any locals except those working in Gayana Island Ecoresort. The resort arranges boats to and from the island which departed on time regardless of the number of passangers. The round trip boat fare cost Rm10. There is nothing much on the island. There is a massage centre on the island, a restaurant, a marine research centre and a water sports equipment renting centre, all belong to the resort. The time table from KK to Gaya island is: 8am, 9:30, 11, 12:30, 3:15, 6pm, 7, 9:30, 11pm The timetable from Gaya Island to KK jetty is: 7:15am, 8:45, 10:15, 11:45, 2.30pm, 5pm, 6:45, 8:45, 10:30pm Leave a Comment Directions: The jetty to Gaya is the same as to the other islands
