KK is a small city, and often boast about travel destinations that are normally OUTSIDE of KK. Having roadtrips or travel adventures to these places are sometimes done best with flexible hours. Whats more you can save and plan ahead with your car rentals through this recent new website I found here at http://www.kinabalucarrental.com.
You will probably need a local road map and travel in small groups to divide the cost. Travelling this way is way more fun, flexible and not confined to rush hours as we can plan our time at our leisure. Fortunately we can pickup and dropoff our rented vehicle at the airport at a specified time, which is a plus.

I found this transport provider cum tour guide. His name is Uncle Liew. Uncle Liew is very good and honest. He is very reliable and does not charge extra for additional trips. I just came back from KK with my family. 6 of us went, and he charged RM 800 for the whole 3D2N trip, including to Kinabalu Park, Kundasang Golf, Desafarm, Pine Resort, Poring Hotspring, Sutera Harbour, return transfer to and from airport, restaurants, etc. He even took us to cheap and nice restaurants.

The easiest and best way to get around Kota Kinabalu is via Taxi . Taxi drivers are a lot nicer than the ones in KL and fares are a lot more fair ! KK is not a big city so the fares are not much anyhow. Taxis of KK are RED ! Don`t forget to make an agreement on the price with the driver before getting on. they most likely will tell you 30 Ringgit , if you are a foreigner, you can make it even 20 if you know how to barg.

If you are going to KK from the Philippines , one of the cheapest ways to get there is via Cebu Pacific Air which is a low cost Airline using Airbus aircraft. Cebu Pacific flies to many cities in East and south east Asia from major Philippine cities like Cebu , Manila and Davao.
Another choice that you have is to fly with Air Asia of Malaysia which is another low cost airline which flies from Clark International Airport in the Philippines. Clark is an hour drive from Manila.

Land/sea transportation from Kota Kinabalu to Jakarta is possible but complicated: first ferry to Labuan, then to Brunei, then bus or minibus to Miri, bus to Kuching then to Pontianak, boat from there to Jakarta or Semarang. Or bus to Tawau, expressboat to Nunuakan, boat to Toli Toli, Palu (Pantoloan on Pelni website), Pare Pare or Makassar / Ujung Padang. Boats are not every day, mostly Pelni (pelni.co.id, website is only sometimes working, Jakarta would be Tanjug Priok on this site).

We left Kota Kinabalu by bus to Sandakan in order to see the Orang-Utans at Sepilok. We took a local bus (RM1.50) to the large Inanam bus station which is located a rather inconvenient 10km north of the city centre. We got to the bus station only to be met by several touts trying to get us on their bus. We got on an express bus to Sandakan which left just after 10am, took about 6 hours and cost RM35.

The main bus station in Bandar Seri Begawan (BSB), Brunei's capital is located in Jalan Cator underneath a multi-story car park. We took a bus from here to the ferry terminal at Muara, 25km northeast of BSB in order to get a ferry to the island of Pulau Labuan and then from there another ferry to Kota Kinabalu. The bus costs B$2 and takes about an hour to get to the ferry terminal and then we took a ferry to Pulau Labuan at 10.30am which cost B$17. From there we just managed to get onto the next ferry to KK which cost B$16 (as they still take Brunei dollars on Pulau Labuan).

KK is the capital of Sabah and definitely the busiest place in the north half of Borneo. There are ample bus options from KK to just about anywhere in Sabah, Brunei and down as far as Miri.
The problem then is that these buses do not all leave from the same place. There are five major bus stations in KK:
North Bus Terminal (Inanam), Pandang Merdeka (Long Distance terminal), Wawasan Plaza, Segama Overhead Pedistrian Bridge, City Park Bus Terminal
Not all stations service all the same destinations. You can get a free comprehensive list of respective destinations, schedules, prices and departing terminal locations.
To do this, visit the Sabah Tourism Board office is at 51 Jl Gaya (Sunday Market Street) and Jl Dewan.
For your information, Bus #3 will take you to Inanam terminal. Other bus numbers can be found at the tourism office.

The Tunku Abdul Rahman marine park, which is located about 15-20 minutes' by boat from KK, consists of five idyllic islands - Sulug, Gaya, Manukan, Mamutik & Sapi. Shallow waters characterise the five islands of the Marine Park and all of them boast of sumptuous coral gardens and splendid white sandy beaches.
For the more adventurous, jet-skiing, scuba-diving, parasailing, seawalking & wakeboarding are some the fun water activities available.
To make arrangmets for your island trip, contact your travel agent or the hotel tour desk or go to Jesselton Point, whereby there are daily boat transfers between 7:30am to 5pm and a return trip to any one island costs around RM24 per person. Boat will depart where there is a minimum of 6 person at one time.
Jesselton Point is not only a jetty but also is good spot to view sunset while dining alfresco. There is also an area for indoor futsal & a small food court.
