    the orangutan feeding platform: Lunch
  • Tip Rating:
  • Satisfaction:
  • Bananas and milk.

One purpose of the rehabilitation center is to provide the young orangutans with a free lunch as they make the transition to jungle life. An orangutan in the wild will eat a large variety of fruits and vegetables. But they only get milk and bananas at the feeding platform. Why? The goal is to provide a fairly bland meal so that the orangutans will forage for their own tastier meals in the surrounding jungle. The rehabilitation center provides sanctuary for orphaned and injured orangutans, but it is not meant to be a permanent restaurant where the orangs can order their favorite jungle delicacies.

The Restaurant is superb, it has everything and manything except air conditioning. But thats not the turning point but the BEST POINT of the restaurat is open air and over looking the city as is located above the hill, properly Sandakan highest restaurant on hill. You can just imagine while eating the steamy seafood accompanied with pint of beer complment with Sandakan harbour view night and feel the cool breeze from sea.

Seafood of course. Buffet style, eat all you can. Just pick as many as fishes, prawns, crabs, lobsters and other meat dishes (which all are raw and need to be cooked on steamy pot which local calls it as steamboat) very similar to Japanese Sukiyaki. You can eat most of all the Sandakan famous for. Can you just imagine Price per person is only RM 18 which is less than £3 per person. Its really damn cheap at highest satisfaction.

BUT DO REMEMBER OF LEFTOVERS!, Any leftovers will be a charge of RM3 for every 100gm. So, just make take enough for your self to enjoy.

NAM KING TOWN HOUSES: SEAFOOD NOODLES
  • Tip Rating:
  • Satisfaction:
  • Again, seafood are the main attraction in Sandakan. The locals are really proud of their seafood cuisine. So often you will be inform which cafe or restaurant to have your breakfast with seafood. Its pretty odd for some people having fishes for breakfast. Not to worry. All seafood is served hot and with delicious slurping noodles.

This particular shop I went in Nam King shop houses served the most delicious seafood noodles i have ever eaten.

Not to confused Fish Ball noodles. This seafood noodles, is served with large tiger prawns, squid, shellfish at your preference of serving with either Hor fun, Ordinary Yellow noodles or Rice Noodles. Best to eat with garlic chilli vinegar with soya sauce. WOW.

We did not have any good thing to say about this place due to the bad service that we got. The ambience is nice and very windy but nothing we can say about the service except that it was horrible. The garden is lovely with peacock walking around it.

We order tea, cakes and scones. We only got our tea and they forgotten our scones and cakes. The staff was having a briefing and totally forgotten our order. Despite calling them they just ignore us and go on with their briefing. We end up paying for our tea and left for the airport to catch our flight back to Kuala Lumpur. Oh and the staffs did not even apologies to us.

NAM KING TOWN HOUSES: SANDAKAN HAS BEST DIM SUM
  • Tip Rating:
  • Satisfaction:
  • I have to admit after been so many places eating Dim Sum , no matter Hong Kong, West Malaysia, and even in London; Sandakan still the best place to eat fresh Dim Sum as the taste of the seafood is different than any other fishes around the region. For anyone likes to eat Dim Sum, make sure when you make a trip to Sandakan try it and you'll know what I meant.

This particular cafe I went for breakfast is at Nam King aka Bandar Ramai - Ramai shophouses, wooden houses above the sea and located next to fisherman's port. Fishes brought directly from the fisherman boat and straight to the kitchen. Very classic.

Prawn and Pork Dumpling is the star, next is Seaweed Prawn Dumpling, and Spicy Chilli Ribs with Blackbean. All above a must try.

This place is simply amazing! After a day in the jungle or a hot/sweaty trip to visit the Orangutans, this restaurant will blow you away! Great food, great service, great view and really cold beer! It is right next to the Agnes Keith Museum and overlooks Sandakan Bay... We stayed for hours as it was the best place we had been to in Sabah!! Don't miss out!!

The Chicken Curry was fantastic -- but everything looked great... They even serve traditional scones & clotted cream!! The menu is really extensive -- a mixture of Western and Asian, with the traditional Fish & Chips, etc.. thrown in for good measure. Prices are ok too -- and there is a great wine list. How refreshing and surprising to find this place in Sandakan of all places!!

    Seafood..
  • Satisfaction:
  • In Sandakan go to the Ocean King Seafood Restaurant at Sandy Plan 4km from the town. Serve mostly all type of seafoods. Restaurant is built on stilts on the sea. Very breezing in the evening. Prices are average, cheaper than KL. Taxi will take you there, but ask for pickup after dinner.

For deserts, try SevenHeaven or Equator in Bandar Indah at ml. 4. There are also few open air pubs at Bandar Indah too.
