Climbing Mount Kinabalu (Mesilau Trail)
Mount Kinabalu (4095.2 m) summit climb can be achieved in a comfortable two days climb. The climb to Low's Peak does not require any technical skills. However, a clean bill of health is strongly encouraged.
Licensed mountain guides (regulated by Sabah Parks) are mandatory, at a ratio of 1:8 climbers. Porters are optional.
Mesilau Trail is an alternative trail to climb Mount Kinabalu. In fact, this is preferable because it is much less crowded than the park headquarter. Mesilau is 20 km from the park headquarter and there is no public transport going there. The road to the resort turns north off the main highway at Kundasang. It is 10 km to the resort from this intersection. The 5.5 km trail from Mesilau meets up with the main trail to Laban Rata at Layang Layang. It takes a little longer (four hours) but the advantages are less people and more sightings of pitcher plants. This route is used mainly for scientists and researchers as it takes longer (1.5 km) as compared to the standard route from Timpohon Gate.

Take your time, don't rush
Take your time to climb up Mount Kinabalu. Don't rush as there is no prize for the first to reach the top. Enjoy the scenery, plants, take photos and be happy. This is why people came in the first place. In fact if you climb too fast, you may get altitude sickness more easily. If you have enough time, you should spend 1-2 extra days exploring the surroundings.

Even when you are at the city of Kota Kinabalu, you can have a very good view of the imposing structure of Mount Kinabalu, especially during the mornings and evenings when there are less clouds.
Look out for interesting plants & flowers
There are lots of interesting plants and flowers which change with the different zones of the mountain. You can spot pitcher plants along the path.
