Jetstar At Kuching Airport

We have flown Jetstar 5 or 6 times now and always had a good flight, discount fares and I would not have any worries flying with them on any flight up to 10 hours. On intenational flights we pay the $60 per seat to obtain emergency exit seats which have additional leg room.

In 2008 we flew Perth to London, a 20 hour flight with a full sevice Asian airline on a full price economy ticket. Jetstar exit seats provide significantly more leg room, however the seats are rigid.

Our Jetstar flight Singapore to Kuching return for 2 persons was Sg$159 inclusive of all taxes and charges. We did not need exit seats for this flight.

Our Perth/ Singapore flight (5 hours) was Au $159 including taxes per person one way. We paid $60 additional for Emergency Exit Seats. Should you require a meal you must purchase on board.

Kuching has a very nice airport. The standard taxi fare from downtown is RM23 and it is a ~20 minute drive in normal traffic. Air Asia did have one auto check-in machine. Note that auto check-in can be done 1-6 hours before your flight, but cannot be used for international flights. The departure area has several restaurants and shops. I tried one of the Marrybrown breakfast sets (one egg, two small hotdogs, spoonfull of beans, two pieces of toast, and coffee) for RM8.90.

A slip is printed and given to you by an immigration officer. Please retain the slip throughout your journey. Sign and return the slip to officer when leaving Kuching.

Purchase your taxi coupon to Kuching town at the counter for only RM17.50. In this way, you can avoid tout. Town to airport is RM15.
Santubong / Damai area RM47.50

Fly Air Asia between KL and Kuching

Friendly Air Asia flight attendants

Air Asia probably offers the widest selection of cheap flights for air travel in SE Asia. They are criticized for not being the most reliable carrier, however out of the 6 flights I took with them, only one was late by 10 minutes.

Air Asia usually has 4-8 flights daily between Kuching and KL. Depending on time of departure and how far ahead you book your ticket, a one-way flight (1h45min) will cost you as little as $40.

Bottom-line: For the budget traveler, Air Asia is a great way to get around SE Asia. They might not always be on time, but you get what you pay for.

Old Style and New Tambangs on the River

The small boats that you can hire to cross the Sarawak River are tambangs (small river ferries or water taxis). I read that they are 30 sen but did not actually take one myself. There is no schedule. Just find one at one of the several landings (e.g. near the Courthouse Complex or near the Hilton Hotel) or wait at the landing until one arrives.
