you cannot cash travellers cheques on the weekend, money-changers will not touch them, even some banks will not cash travellers cheques.
the sarawak art and craft council is a big disappointment, very limited selection at high prices, only carried one pua kumbu cloth(small size)
sarawak cultural village also somewhat disappointing, no activities or demonstrations at all and seemed a bit run down, although the dance performance was interesting

One of the colorful things to watch is the medicine man who puts up a show to attract an audience at the sidewalk. I saw this person in India Street and he had a live snake that crawled out from a sack.
Then, he'll show how he can control the snake with his "magical" medicine. After the show, he'll start promoting his "magical" medicine to everyone and "guarantees its effectiveness. This potion is supposedly able to cure all sorts of ailments
Unique Suggestions: Just enjoy the show

Of course you want to shop for souvenirs! The long road of shops along the river front offer a really good selection of items, lots of them 'cat themed'. Unfortunately, the items are not particularly cheap and you only really need to visit a few shops, as each one offers very similar merchandise at very similar prices. There's not much bargaining to be had either - a good or bad thing depending on how you look at it!
Fun Alternatives: If you are travelling to a long house during your trip, why not buy something directly from the people who made it?

There are food stall in front of water front. Especially night, you may happen to go there for a drink. Noted that the price is very expensive. I pay rm1 for a cup of teh tarik in west malaysia but paying rm4 for a cup of teh tarik at water front hawker stall. Although the expenses in east malaysia is slightly higher than west malaysia, but it still should not shoot up to rm4.

Kuching happens to mean "cat" in Malay (Kucing), but it is very doubtful that the origin of the city's name has anything to do with cats.
However, cats are the symbol of the city and you can find many horrible sculptures of cats around Kuching. (See picture)
I did not see many real cats in Kuching, though.
Kuching cats are reknown for being kink-tailed.
Unique Suggestions: If you are a cat lover, Kuching has the only cat museum in Asia.
