Matang is place where my parent used to take us kids for family picnic among the lush cool topical mountain streams. It is about 40 mins from Kuching so you will need a car.
The Wildlife Center will also give you an opportunity to see Orang Utans and other local wildlife but for me it's the opportunty to get out of the city, see the country side and take a dip in the cold mountain stream which is the main draw.
With the heat and humidity in Kuching it is always great to take an enjoyable dip in the cold stream under the shady canopy of trees there This is one of the locals favourite thing to do on weekend so expect it to be quite crowded on weekend. If you can go during the weekdays.

The Center is set up tp care for endangered species which have either been found injured in the forest, or have been kept as illegal pets. In addition to the famous Orand Utans , the centre also houses a number of different species including rescued hornbills, honey bears, gibbons and porcupines.
It is located about 40mins drive from the City.
The best time to visit is feeding time (approx. 8.30 to 9 am and 2.30 to 3 pm) . This will give you a good chance of seeing the semi-wild Orang Utans who live in the surrounding forest return to the feeding area.

Not exactly off the beaten track but not a lot of tourists do this as they spent most of their time in the resorts .
For a good work out you can climb through the rainforest to the summit of Mount Santubong. It's a 6 hours trek and can be very steep in places but will give you a fanstatic view of the surrounding arear at the top.

Along India Street, which is designated as a pedestrian walkway, are a variety of shophouses trading colourful textiles, clothing, crockery and other essentials in a manner which has not changed much in the past decades. Bargaining is very much a way of life here.
