Crocodile Farm

The Crocodile welcoming you.

The Crocodile Farm is located at the outskirt of Miri, about 45 minutes drive from the city heading towards Brunei.

The main attraction is the various type of crocodiles on display in their natural habitat. However there are also some other animal species (snakes, birds and monkeys) in the farm making it more like a mini zoo then a crocodile farm.

Nevertheless, the crocodiles are the star attraction here with a crocodile statute welcoming the visitors and a mini information corner on almost everything about crocodiles; including story on Bujang Senang that wrack havoc on Rejang river some time ago.

Tua Pek Kong Temple

Located next to the Fish Market, this is the oldest Chinese Temple in Miri, built in 1913. According to local beliefs, due to the oil boom of the early 1900s and its subsequent population explosion, an unknown epidemic struck Miri, resulting in a high death toll in what was then a small village. The local Chinese of that time believed the tragedy was caused by evil spirits. A Chinese wise man known as Chan Chak suggested that a monk be called to appease the spirits. Thus, a spirit-pacifying ritual was carried out near Miri River, where an altar was placed. The Chinese residents believed the monk chased away the evil spirits and the epidemic subsided. In gratitude, they erected the temple near the river to revere Tua Pek Kong, a god commonly worshipped by Chinese immigrants.

This museum sits on top of Oil Well Hill (formerly Canada Hill) opposite the Grand Old Lady, the first oil well that was dug in Malaysia in 1910. Completed in 2005, this museum is built to keep in perpetuity the history of the petroleum industry in Sarawak and its enormous contribution to the development and prosperity of Miri and Sarawak in general. Through displays and interactive exhibits it offers an insight into the science and technology of oil exploration plus production, refining and distribution.

Open: 9am-4.30pm every day except Mondays. Admission: Free.

If you like looking at cemeteries, (I do) then there is a huge chinese one here. I found it interesting, the headstones on lots were beautiful.
Its so big, you can easily see it when flying in.
Also, if you head to the older part of Mir, there is actually another cemetery located in the centre of a divided road.

Seahorse Lighthouse

Miri has an emblem, and that emblem is a SEA HORSE. On your wanders around the City, you are sure to find plenty of these sculptures. Probably, one of the more unusual sights, is the Lighthouse, as this is done like a giant Sea Horse.

Evidently, its location is meant to be the best place to see the sunset!

Miri city fan park

Miri City Fan is a very nice park area situated in Miri. If you can view it from the air, then you will see that it is in the shape of a fan. T
There is a variety of theme gardens, including a Botanical Garden and an Islamic Garden. The Miri City Library, a Public Swimming Pool, and a large Amphitheatre where concerts are frequently held are nearby.

This park is a popular area with the locals, and we thought, one of the nicer spots in Miri.

Tua Pek Kong Temple

This Temple is located in the Old Town section of Miri, at the junction where China Street meets Jalan Bendahara.

It is the oldest Chinese temple in Miri, being built in 1913 by Chinese migrants

It is interesting how this Temple came to be......According to local belief, Miri experienced a mysterious epidemic in 1913. The oil boom and population explosion, unmatched by improved sanitation, probably had something to do with this, but many locals believed that it was caused by evil spirits. A Buddhist monk was invited to perform a spirit pacifying ritual, and the epidemic subsided.

The Shrine was built as a thanks-offering.
