Poh Guan Hong: The Legend of Sibu

by JasonLing Updated Mar 3, 2013
Poh Guan Hong - The Legend of Sibu

Among all the Chinese Pharmacies in Sibu, Poh Guan Hong is in my opinion the more famous one. It was founded over 70 years ago by a Traditional Chinese Physician from China - Ting Ung Kee. He established Poh Guan Hong and started selling Chinese herbs and provide Chinese medicine consultation and treatment.

He also created one of the most talked about stomachache medicine in Sarawak - Ubat Sakit Perut Sing Kong Chui. The reason behind its creation is a noble one. In the 50s, Ting noticed that there were not many pharmacies or clinics around Sibu, and the transportation to Sibu was not very convenient as well. Many Sibu villagers did not have easy access to medicine when needed. So he created Sing Kong Chui to fight common sickness (stomachache, nausea, bloating etc) so that the villagers could easily self-treat when necessary.

Ask anyone in Sarawak and they can tell you the effectiveness of the medicine. Many Sarawakians bring boxes of the medicine to their oversea families too in cases of common sickness. So if you are feeling unwell while travelling in Sibu, Sing Kong Chui can also be found all over the Chinese Pharmacies in East Malaysia. If you are in the area then just visit Poh Guan Hong to buy the medicine.

Nowadays, his sons and grandsons are running the shop providing the same high quality service, selling high quality products. Poh Guan Hong has one of the most complete collection of Chinese herbs in Sibu, or even Sarawak. Have a visit to this historical shop and look at the art of Traditional Chinese Medicine in Sibu.

What to buy: Ubat Sakit Perut Sing Kong Chui, Chinese Herbs, Herbal Soup Mix, Birds Nest, Ginseng, Various medicinal products.
