Visit The Historical Padang Kelab Selangor
  • Tip Rating:
  • At the stroke of midnight on August 31, 1957, a new nation called Malaya was born.

Malayans thronged Stadium Merdeka to watch Bapa Kemerdekaan ("Father of Independence"), Tunku Abdul Rahman, declaration of Independence:
    "Merdeka! Merdeka! Merdeka!"

Simultaneously across town at the Padang Kelab Selangor, the Union Jack was lowered and the Malayan Flag was raised, signifiying a new beginning for the nation that would eventually become Malaysia.

Those who could not be at either the stadium or at Dataran Merdeka, stayed glued to black and white TV sets at public places such as coffee shops. (In the 50's very few people were rich enough to own their own tv set at home.)

In the spirit of Malaysia Boleh (Malaysia Can Do It!), Dataran Merdeka is now the home of the Tallest Flag Pole in the World. On Saturday nights, Dataran Merdeka is closed of to traffic to allow pedestrians to enjoy the festival of lights and occasionally activities such as open-air concerts are held here.

The hill, also known as Bukit Bendera, is 830 meter high
(2,750 foot) and it's much cooler than in the city below. It's about 3 degrees cooler than the places near the coast.
The station to get to the top is located in Air Itam

The funicular at the railway station takes you to the top and it will cost you RM4.50 for one way. The train leaves the station at Air Itam at 6.30am and at half hourly intervals.
The funicular railway will not take you straight to the top, you have to change trains halfway. in the meantime you'll pass several small station, where the local people get off. There are are also some small hotels and guesthouses on this stretch. The railway was built in 1923 and it takes about half an hour to the top.
At the top of the hill, you'll find a tea kiosk, restaurants, souvenir stalls, a mosque, Hindu temple, and the old Bellevue hotel. The summit offers a magnificent panoramic view of Georgetown, the mainland and Penang Bridge.

From Georgetown, take a Transit Link bus No 1, or No 101,

Welcome to the Little Forbidden City of Penang ...its magnificent carvings and setting will bring you to the era of Middle Kingdom ...

The forefathers of the Khoo family who emigrated from South China built it as a clan-house for members of the Khoo family. It was burnt down in 1894 and some believed that it was due to its resemblance to the Emperor's palace. A scaled down version was later built in 1902. The building features a magnificent hall embellished with intricate carvings and richly ornamented beams of the finest wood bearing the mark of master craftsmen from China.

Check more awesome pics of Khoo
    Kongsi in my Penang page

Entrance is RM 5 per person.

    Rantau Abang (Must Know)
  • Tip Rating:
  • Turtle@Rantau Abang by Designerartgirl - Malaysia

Rantau Abang is famous for the shortness of the beach which goes into the ocean, as there is a huge drop of depth very quickly near the beach. This means that it becomes easier for the turtle to come ashore at night. Means less crawling on the beach, which is a difficult task for a turtle, and the laying of eggs often takes a few hours.

I received this mail from VTer Designerartgirl describes the uniqueness of Rantau Abang's terrain that make it ideal place for turtle to come ashore to lay eggs. She was working (July 1st - 30th September 2005) for a hatchery just up the road from Rantau Abang on a resort called Gemia Island which runs its own hatchery.

Thanks Designerartgirl for this valuable fact.

The Rules-how to get a free ticket
  • Tip Rating:
  • The ticket counter opens at 8.30 am on Tuesdays to Sundays. Queue up to get the tickets ahead of time, and choose a time when you want to commence your tour. The first tour begins at 9.00 am.

The time of the tour shall be printed onto your ticket. My friend whose office is in the building kindly queued up at 8.30 am and got us some tickets for 12.30pm. (I was stuck at Mandarin Oriental on a seminar and couldn't queue myself)

There are only a limited number of tickets available each day. Usually, all tickets for the same day will be "sold-out" by noon. I believe Group bookings are also allowed for 1-2 days in advance. Children also require tickets and children under 12 must be accompanied by an adult.

The best thing is that the tickets are absolutely FREE.

My colleagues couldn't believe that the tickets were free and kept offering to pay me back for the tickets. LOL

    Genting highland ....Malaysia's Summer Palace
  • Tip Rating:
  • Well though Genting is officially part of Pahang , one of the 13 states of Malaysia, people are so used to going KL plus Genting that her name sticks to KL more than to Pahang . Well whats more whne she is just like an hour drive away !

Its an all year round summer palace for Malaysia , its a city itself up there that you have almost all the entertainment you can ask for ...so complete that you will be totally spoiled !

You can go up to genting either by car / limo or cable car. Buses have been banned from going up due to safety reasons. Well who wants to ride abus when you can experience the high-adrenalin cable car ride !

Looking down the ravine will make the chill run down your backbone, whats more when its misty ..you cant even see the cable car in front or the back of you ...just like a capsule hanging amongst the cloud ...wait a minute isnt that cool or scary actually !

Well its the mind that makes the difference !

But be rest assured the quality of Genting's cable car is very high. At if you are lucky you may even see some exotic animals ....if you dare to look down !

My own scary experience was during my company trip up there. Well as usual me and 4 of my buddies planned to hog one cable car for ourselves ( thinking that its would be just nice ), so happily we waited for our turn.
When the car came, we quickily barged in and smiling to each other for getting to sit with our own buddies. But our so called PLAN turned into a horrifying experience when the personel in charged of allocating seats to cable car passenger suddenly push another guy into our cable car . Not that we are so selfish that we dun wanna share but what do you think when the guy is 3 times my size and weigh at least 130 kg ...needless to say my whole journey was mainly praying and praying ...

well anyway the ride was full of fun !

Now that you have KL literally at your feet, where do you begin. You only have a few minutes to take some pictures and to admire the view.
On your left, you will see the fountain which is at the front of the Suria KLCC main entrance. Surrounding it is the KLCC park.

    Visit the KLCC Skybridge
  • Tip Rating:
  • The KLCC Skybridge was made famous in the movie Entrapment, starring the sophisticated and sultry Catherine Zeta-Jones, and the impeccably suave, Sean Connery.

I had a group of colleagues from the Phillipines and Vietnam who wanted to visit the famous bridge. If it wasn't for them, I'd never have bothered to visit. Do you find that as a local, you're always the last ones to visit any tourist attractions? :-)
