Historic sites and nature of Bukit Melawati
  • Tip Rating:
  • The tourist attractions on the west coast of the state of Selangor are the town of Kuala Selangor and the hill of Bukit Melawati. Since it is located about 100 kms from Kuala Lumpur, it could not have escaped our attention. The drive itself was very pleasant on a winding road through palm oil plantations with many roadside Indian localities.

Once at Bukit Melawati, the most recognizable of all its landmarks was the elegant lighthouse with a history that spans more than 100 years (picture). Standing at the roadside or on a specially constructed corner platform, one can take pleasure in the panoramic view of the Straits of Malacca and over 250 hectare of mangrove swamp lands. The roadside vendors would craft wooden artifacts for you on site and we had several carved out in a jiffy.

Bukit Melawati is a favourite natural habitat of the silver-leaf monkeys, the cutest and most friendliest of monkeys we have ever seen in our lives. Soon a pack of Silver-Leaf Monkeys gathered around us expecting goodies. They were not disappointed. A mother with a reddish baby gained our special attention, but she was quite wary.

Shady hundred-year old trees and curiously shaped stones adorn Bukit Melawati. Two historic 18th century fortresses are located on the hill top from where the ancient Sultans of Malay might have put up fierce resistance to invading armadas of sea-faring nations. But the history tells that finally their resistance was broken. The larger of the two fortresses is now the royal mausoleum, where three previous Sultans of Selangor were buried.

Reportedly, at the foot of the hill, behind the Kuala Selangor Post Office, lies a well. A source of water for the residents Kuala Selangor. There used to be 7 wells here, giving the name Tujuh Telaga (Seven Wells). Unfortunately, we were tired and did not visit that site.

For more coverage, please read my Salangor page that I will build soon.

    Pulau Dayang Bunting
  • Tip Rating:
  • Off Kedah mainland, there is this legendary Pulau Dayang Bunting (Pregnant Maiden). You can visit this island as part of the Island Hoping package by any Langkawi tour agencies.

Do pay attention to the shape of the hills. Amazing huh!!!

Pulau Dayang Bunting is famous not only because of this pregnant maiden shaped formation, but it is more famous for its freshwater lake that is behind this formation. The lake is quite big, so much so that you can enjoy the banana boat in the lake. And the strangest thing about this lake is the rock at the opening as if there is one giant cork made of rock preventing the salt water from contaminate this freshwater lake.

    Around Kuala Lumpur
  • Tip Rating:
  • Unavoidably the most the visitor sees of Malaysia would be the city of Kuala Lumpur, and its surroundings.

This is what you notice in Petaling Jaya, just outside Kuala Lumpur, in the state of Selangor.

Apartments are very popular residential styles here.

But we do have lots of land, though land in the city is very expensive. That's why they take to the skies !

See Kancil Rusa i.e. Mouse Deer

  • Axis Deer (?) at KL Deer Park - Malaysia
Axis Deer (?) at KL Deer Park

Apart from the well known Bird Park, Butterfly Park and Orchid Garden around the Lake Gardens, is less known and harder to find Kuala Lumpur Deer Park (or Taman Rusa in Malay). Very few taxi drivers know about it as we discovered to our complete disappointment. Reason is that the taxi drivers are paid some ringits by the authorities for bringing tourists to the other 3 parks, but the same is not done for Deer Park.

The Park is set up in a beautifully landscaped hills and slopes that are heavily rain forested. One has to walk on a board walk.

Mouse Deer (not shown here, but see under off the beaten path tip) is a smallest hoofed animal and is a popular character in Malaysian folktales for its cunning wit. Folktales tell us that because of its wit, it was able to foil plans of tiger, crocodile and the snake.

The exit from the park is towards the Lake Garden. from here, it is better to take the train back to Bird Park for a cab back to the city.

Caution/Awas (in Malay): Beware of the monkeys outside the entrance gate.

  • Address: Lake Gardens
  • Directions: When moving from Orchid Gardens to Bird Park, don't turn right towards the entrance of the latter (i.e. do not head towards Butterfly Park), but go straight on the narrow road till you see the small green gate of Deer Park on your left.

    The Roof of Khoo Kongsi
  • Tip Rating:
  • I think this is the only temple / clan house where even the roof is so richly decorated ...( luckily I have my camera with 10X zoom with me , else we can hardly see whats on top of the roof , as its quite high and from beloe you can only see it as a cluster of decorations )

And now you see that its just alike a small city on top of the roof, the parts of the Kongsi ( Clan house ) is either brought from China or painstakingly being carved by Master Craftsmen from China.

Why 88 stories for Petronas Towers?
  • Tip Rating:
  • Petronas Towers by night. - Malaysia
    Petronas Towers by night.

    Why?

Hint: It is not for Bingo's (or Tambola's) call of "two fat ladies eighty-eight"

    ;-)

It is because the digit 8 is considered a symbol of luck in Malay (or for that matter Southeast Asian) culture. So you have double luck looking over KL :-)

We had been to Sears Tower, WTC, Empire State Building and Hancock Center. We always wanted to visit Petronas eversince it was built. So we could not have missed it, at least for 3 other reasons:

    1. Petrosains Museum, located on 4th floor,
    2. Shops and
    3. Foodcourt.

Unfortunately, the bridge and observation deck were closed for grand opening on 31st August. We enjoyed the other aspects of it mentioned above though.

The best thing to do would be to set aside a whole day for the Towers and avail all its offerings.

Have you seen the real Kuala Lumpur?
  • Tip Rating:
  • I bet not.

But what is real Kuala Lumpur? Is it Bukit Bintang (the haven for shoppers), Bukit Tankoo (the place of the very rich), Chinatown (the place for experts in haggling), Bukit Nanas (a forest at the foot of KL Tower), what?

Not many people have seen the real KL, that is, the very place where lie the origins of this great city. Kuala Lumpur means junction of two rivers. The picture shows the exact spot from where KL grew up into one of the most touristy of cities in the world. This is the real KL. It came into being with about 100 Chinese residents brought from mainland China to work on Tin mines.

In the background, you see Masjid Jamay (the Grand Mosque).

It was dusk when we went there. The two rivers had calmed down. The four of us just sat down on the parapet wall and kept looking at the rivers and the Mosque, discussing the advancement of the country and so many of its touristic places yet to be seen by us, even though we had finished a number of those on our itinerary.

Caution: We were told that the Imam of the mosque fell down in the river few months ago while feeding the fish. His dead body was recovered few miles downstream. The river is muddy and its difficult to swim.

    Casino ...amongst the cloud
  • Tip Rating:
  • The only casino in Malaysia, perched loftily amidst the clouds in the highlands at 2,000 metres above sea level. Full of glitter and excitement, the atmosphere is best described as electrifying!

Casino de Genting offers a host of exciting international games, among the more popular of which are: Roulette, Keno, Baccarat and Blackjack. Jackpot machines are the added attractions. International class shows and live entertainment provide the accompanying glitz and glamour.

    Penang
  • Tip Rating:
  • Penang, my home town. I lived in a tiny town of Bukit Mertajam (outside Penang island but still a town in the mainland, within the state of Penang) for a few years. And I still go back to home town, people here always say "balik kampong".

Penang island is a smal island north of Peninsula Malaysia, near to Thailand. There are a lot to see in Penang. Chinese culture is prominent there. Some of the places you MUST visit are Penang Hill, beaches in Penang, Kek Lok Si Temple, Dam, Georgetown, Love Lane, etc. Food is absolutely good there. Try the Penang Prawn Soup Mee, Lor Mee, Char Kway Teow, Penang Laksa, Lor Bak, etc etc.
