Sarawak - Semenggok Wildlife Center

by ant1606

Semenggok is a rehabilitation center for orangutans and other species. Spelling might vary to Semengoh, Semenggoh.Animals in this sanctuary are those seized from illegal captive keepers, orphans or injured subjects.Scope of this center is to reintroduce animals, mainly orangutangs, into the wilderness. After giving medical assistance and progress through programs aimed at teaching social behavior and confidence with the jungle, the animals are released to freedom into the adjacent protected area. Once the animals are released, the sanctuary provides feeding programs to ensure food availability in case the animals are unable to find enough food by themselves. Food is left on dedicated platforms at given times and this policy leaves orangutans totally free to visit the center upon need. Most releases end up as a complete success.Feeding time occurs twice daily and these events are the main...

ORANG UTAN AND NATURE TOURS

by win59

Borneo is a home of unique fauna. Watch orang utangs feeding at one of the rehabilitation centers. See other unique animals of Borneo, such as Proboscis Monkeys and Hornbills. Spend the evening on Turtle Island to actually see the sea turtles hatching and safety making their way to the ocean. Take a river ride on Sabah's longest river, the Sungai Kinbatangan, to see various animal in the wild. It was a wonderful things to get a chance to hold and release young turtles to the ocean.

The Proboscis Monkey

by kyoub

We went out to the Lubuk Bay Proboscis Monkey Sanctuary. This is the only place that they feed the monkeys, twice daily. You you are sure to be able to see Daddy, wives, and offspring come out of the forest to eat.The animals are endangered due to lack of mangroves that have been taken over by palm oil growers.

Mt. Kinabalu - the tallest peak in Southeast Asia!

by twoseids

At over 14,000 feet, Mount Kinabalu is Southeast Asia's tallest peak. And surprisingly, it is quite climbable! Thousands of people summit the mountain each year. The day I went, I think there were about 60 people at the summit with me at sunrise, and still more came up as the morning went on.You start at about 5,000 feet. You have to hire a guide if you're going all the way up. You climb up to about 11,000 feet, where there is a restaurant and a hostel. They have porters who carry the food and gas canisters up the mountain daily - in fact, you will likely be passed by them at some point as they zip up the trail! If you take a nice, leisurely pace with occasional stops at the rest huts, you should hit the camp in about 6 hours. The next morning, as long as altitude sickness hasn't hit you too bad, you leave at about 2:00am so you can hit the summit by sunrise. You spend as much time as you...

Travel Itinerary West Coast

by sheherezad

I would suggest the following itinerary (you can do it in reverse): KUL (LCCT) - PEN (UNESCO World Heritage City) (flight) - Ipoh (bus or train from Butterworth - take the ferry to reach it for a varied travel experience) - CH - KL. Btw you can also fly to PEN from KL from the old airport SZB! If you leave out Ipoh and decide to stay longer in KL - there is FRIM, Kuala Selangor and the fireflies for you to see at dusk - the choice is endless! Or better still a weekend in Melaka (another UNESCO World Heritage City) recommended WAY above IPOH! See my Melaka pages for a glimpse :-)

Ramayana Cave at Batu Caves

by ruffled

While most tourists won't skip a trip to the temples at Batu Caves, there is an exhibit within the compound that depicts the story of Lord Rama. The cave is still under construction but the outer section is already open and entrance is cheap (1 Ringgit!!). Key scenes are shown with statues. There is also a natural spring within the limestone cave so it's pretty fascinating.Since it's still under-construction, there are areas that are currently off-limits and the captions are only in Tamil. Hopefully they will soon add English (at least!) to make the experience more meaningful.Otherwise a nice visit for interesting statues, legends and for a walk into a natural cave if you have the time.

Tropical rainforest

by sheherezad

For a taste of the jungle, go to the Forest Research Institute (FRIM) in the outskirts of Kuala Lumpur. But beware of d leaches! :( Expect FRIM to be hot and very humid! To experience the real tropical rainforest go to Taman Negara in Pahang! Don't forget your leach socks! It's notorious for leaches!

Must sees - addendum: Will edit all later! ;-)

by sheherezad

I suggest the coastal drive - very picturesque passing by idiylic Malay kampongs (villages) with cononut trees and a view of the South China Sea :-) Once you get close to Cherating! And, btw, I forgot the Bird Park in KL's Lake Gardens - it's the largest canopied bird park in the world! Where the birds fly freely! You'll get to see the hornbill, too! :-)And opposite it is the Orchid garden and nearby the deer park! There's a butterfy park, too, if I recall correctly, as I haven't been there for ages!

MUST SEES - CONTINUED!

by sheherezad

> Kuala Lumpur: buildings, I mean the Twin Tower; Check out the Tabung Haji building, too, at the corner of Jalan Ampang and Jalan Tun Razak (near the Twin Towers), the old railway station, the National Mosque, the Court Houses building opposite Merdeka Square and the Royal Selangor Club building, too, adjacent to Merdeka Square :-)> Batu Caves; Yes!Genting Highland (casino and the cable car)Casino - Yikes! Cable car ride - maybe :-)> cultural mix, and food Absolutely, mah :-)> Jungle Train: espcially the later part from Gua Musang to Kota Bharu Double check this - if most of it will be at night. If it is suggest road trip to KB - you'll see miles and miles of beaches enroute. In KB go to Pasar Siti Kadhijah :-)> Jungle itself: Teman Negara, one of the oldest rain forests, from Gua Musang side Not sure about this - never been there but from what I know most people go from...

Must sees/dos in Malaysia!

by sheherezad

And then there is Ipoh for an old town and great Chinese food/white coffee (you can see a bit of Ipoh on my travel pages) and Taiping (for it's wonderful Lake Gardens and Zoo - don't know the state of the Museum now) and Langkawi/Pangkor/Pangkor Laut for islands/beaches.. And Cameron Highlands/Fraser's Hill/Maxwell Hill for colonial hill stations (the latter two less developed) and the beautiful beaches on the East Coast - all in Peninsular Malaysia.I've only been to Miri on the Sarawak/Sabah side but you can climb Mount Kinabalu/just stay at the base camp, visit the Orang Utan rehabilitation centres, go to Niah Caves/stay in indigenious long houses/go to the Mulu pinnacles etc etc. You'll be spoilt for choice and by the great food! :-)
