Kuching.

by cachaseiro

Kuching is located in the state os Sarawak on malaysian Borneo. It´s a pleasant town by the river that is worth a visit in itself as it´s rather pretty and it can also serve as a good gateway to visit some of the tribes in the interior of Borneo.Kuching means cat in malay and it has become malaysias official cat city and the town is full of cat statues which are quite odd, but i find it really charming.

Georgetown/Penang.

by cachaseiro

Georgetown on the island Penang is one of my absolute favorite spots in Asia. It´s a historical old city and has recently been declared UNESCO world heritage. It´s also a very livable city and it attracts many foreigners too who settle there ebcause of the good quality of life. It´s a bustling city of 220 000 inhabitants, but it has a laid back vibe that is real good and the old colonial houses gives it some real charm. It´s also one of the best places in Asia to eat as you have high representation of Chinese and indians aswell as malay and prices in Georgetown are also generally lower than most of Malaysia.

Kuala Lumpur.

by cachaseiro

Kuala Lumpur is the capital of Malaysia and a huge modern city that is moving and shking big time. The fact that Malaysia is one of the biggest oil producing nations in the word has meant that Kuala Lumpur has become an important financial center and there is an amazing number of highrise buildings there. But Kuala Lumpur is also a city full of nice little street kitchens and a lively street life and good bars for those who like to go for a drink at night.I personally really like Kuala Lumpur and would prefer it any day if compared to other mega cities in Asia such as Bangkok or Manila.

The Sultan Abdul Samad Building

by traveldave

The Sultan Abdul Samad Building is a major landmark in Kuala Lumpur, and although there is nothing inside to attract tourists, it is one of the most photographed buildings in the city. The building currently houses the offices of the Ministry of Information, Communications and Culture, and formerly housed the Federal Court of Malaysia, the Court of Appeals, and the High Court of Malaysia. The Sultan Abdul Samad Building was built to house the former colonial administration center during the era of British rule. It was named in honor of the reigning sultan of Selangor at the time of its construction, which occured from 1894 to 1897. The building was designed by two Public Works Department architects, A.C. Norman and Arthur Benison Hubback. They were influenced by Islamic architectural styles they had seen while stationed in India, and designed the building with Moorish, Indian, and Arabic...

The Petronas Twin Towers

by traveldave

The Petronas Twin Towers became the tallest buildings in the world when completed in 1998. They rise to a height of 1,483 feet (452 meters). However, they lost their status as the world's tallest buildings with the topping-off of 1,666-foot (508-meter) Taipei 101 in Taipei, Taiwan in 2004. Since then, several more buildings have surpassed even Taipei 101 in height. However, the buildings are still the world's tallest twin towers.Designed by Argentinian architect César Pelli, the Petronas Twin Towers took seven years to build. They were constructed of reinforced concrete with a steel-and-glass façade, designed with Islamic motifs to reflect Malaysia's official religion. Each tower was built by a different consortium of construction companies: Tower 1 was built by a Japanese consortium, and Tower 2 was built by a South Korean consortium.Because of the great depth of the bedrock at the...

The Batu Caves

by traveldave

Limestone mountains tower over the northern suburbs of Kuala Lumpur, and many contain caves that were formed by erosion around 400,000,000 years ago. One of these mountains contains the Batu Caves, which take their name from the Batu River that flows past the mountain in which they are located. The Batu Caves contain a series of Hindu cave temples that are located in three main caves and several smaller caves. The main cave, called the Temple Cave, has a 328-foot (100-meter) ceiling, and features an ornate Hindu temple and statues. These temples are some of the most popular Hindu temples outside of India. The caves were promoted as a place of Hindu worship by Thamboosamy Pillai, the founder of the Sri Mahamariamman Temple in Kuala Lumpur. He dedicated the Temple Cave to Lord Murugam in 1890, and installed a large statue of Sri Subramania Swamy. Nowadays, the Batu Caves are the focal point...

The Chan See Shu Yuen Temple

by traveldave

The Chan See Shu Yuen Temple is located in Kuala Lumpur's Chinatown. It was constructed in 1906, making it one of the oldest surviving Buddhist temples in Malaysia. The temple was built by the Chan See Shu Yuen Clan Association, and is part of the complex of buildings housing the clan association's administrative offices and other activities. The Chan See Shu Yuen Clan Association is the clan house of the Yuen family. Founded more than 100 years ago, it is the oldest clan house in Kuala Lumpur. In its early history, the clan took in members of the extended family that were newly arrived from China and gave them refuge, helped them financially, and helped them find work and homes. The Chan See Shu Yuen Temple features Guangdong-style glazed ceramic tiles on its roof and terra cotta friezes that depict scenes from Chinese history and mythology. The ornate central altar belonged to the clan...

The Sri Mahamariamman Temple

by traveldave

Many Malaysians practice the Hindu religion, and there are many Hindu temples that can be visited in Kuala Lumpur. The oldest, largest, and most important Hindu temple in the city is the Sri Mahamariamman Temple. Its main feature is the Raja Gopuram. A gopuram is a tower of south Indian origin that is covered with colorful Hindu dieties. The temple was founded in 1873 by Thamboosamy Pillai, a civil servant turned businessman. Initially the temple served as the private shrine of the Pillai family, but it was opened to the public in the late 1920s. That first temple was located near the Kuala Lumpur Railway Station, but was moved to its present location near the edge of Chinatown in 1885. The original brick building built in 1885 was demolished in 1968 to make way for the present temple. The Raja Gopuram was completed in 1972. The five-tiered tower is 75 feet (23 meters) tall, and is...

The Kuala Lumpur Railway Station

by traveldave

The Kuala Lumpur Railway Station was Kuala Lumpur's railway hub for the Federated Malay States Railways and the Malayan Railway until 2001, when the modern Kuala Lumpur Sentral Station was completed. The old station still handles commuter and freight trains, and houses a new railway museum. The old station was completed in 1910 to replaced an earlier railway station on the same site. It was designed by British architect Arthur Benison Hubback. Having served in India, he was inspired by the Raj style of architecture common there, which combines Western and Mughal influences. The station's mixture of architectural features includes turrets, spires, minarets, and arches. The travel writer, Paul Theroux, called it "the grandest station in Southeast Asia."The Raj-style train station, juxtaposed against a background of modern glass skyscrapers, offers great photographic opportunities.

Orang Utan Rehabilitation Centers

by winniekho

You can easily visiting the Semongoh sanctuary as part of your city tour in Kuching or on your way to or from Batang Ai. Sepilok requires a flight, but is also near Turtle Island, where you can watch sea turtles hatching and making their way out to sea, or you could attend the Kinabatangan river where Proboscis monkeys and other wild animals frequent. Orang Utan knows as the “Wild Man of Borneo”. You will find them swinging through the forest in Sepilok, the world’s largest orang utan sanctuary. In this sanctuary, orang utans that have been abandoned by their mothers, or were formerly in captivity, are rehabilitated until fit enough to be returned to the wild. Watching these charming and entertaining mammals during feeding time is a sheer delight.
