Taxi Trap

by honeymoon4ever

Good thing I read all of KL tips here before traveling coz what they say about taxi drivers not using thier meter were all true! So beware! If a taxi driver asks for a fixed price and doesn't want to use his meter, then all you need to do is transfer to another descent and honest taxi driver in KL. There still are honest drivers here you know.

Old trick - Malaysian dollar not US dollar

by SLLiew

This is an old tourist trap. Hopefully you will not encounter it anymore. In the 1965, Malaysian, Brunei and Singapore currency were at par and used interchangeable and commonly called "Dollar". Malaysian currency is now called "Ringgit" (RM=Ringgit Malaysia) but the word dollar is still used by some.So if you are bargaining on a price and the seller is using "dollar", do confirm that you are talking about "ringgit" and not "US dollar" when agreeing to final price.

KL Central LRT station

by mazlynm

KL sentral as the name suggests, connects many public transport systems such as the monorail, train and light railway transit. I stopped here to take a cab to JW Marriot Hotel and it cost me RM9 as you have to prepay at the counter before entering the cab.The same journey later from the hotel to the station only cost RM6. Perhaps it is cheaper to stop at the station before or after KL Sentral and take the cab from there as you can use the meter.

Disadvantage of making yourself stand out ;)

by muadmz

You will find the occassional salespersons that try to sell you that tries to con you, however it helps to go to check out alot of places before making your mind up ;) you will find that it is worth it at the end. Cab drivers are as always the worst if your thinking of getting a cab to travel to a long distance location. Make sure when your there, you try to be more casual cause dressing up like its your first time in the country can get you into one of those tourist traps. Try to read a bit about the country and make yourself feel at home. When you go into a cab, make sure they onn the travel meter which they are by law supposed to use.But the best alternative is to always have a few cab numbers with you, which you can get off any cab you take or even from the taxi adverts that are stuck on the outside of cabs.If your travelling long distance, make sure you call a few hours earlier to...

A Nose Specialist ?

by gnh

This is a specialist in the other kind - tricking unsuspecting folks, not you I hope.Probably a practitioner of traditional medicine. He's been healing some sick people, no doubt. Go the the city or town where there are properly trained physicians to deal with your nose, eyes, body, head, heart or soul.

For 1 night only!

by TracyG

I think that Johor Bahru (just over the causway from Singapore) itself is a bit of a let down. It is one of those places that you can only stay 1 night. You'll probably end up doing that anyway. Sorry to anyone that lives here! Have a walk around the city or go shopping. Head straight for Kuala Lumpur.

Beware of Taxi Drivers

by bluepigsinthesky

Being a local doesn't exclude you from the occasional mountebank. Taxi drivers are required to use the meter, yet many charge a fix rate. Always discuss with the driver before actually getting in to the car about the destination and the rates they charge... tip is not obligatory, though i do it on habit.

Taxi at Puduraya

by ngcsc

Don't believe the taxi driver at pudaraya, not matter how you bargain, you will find out the price is much higher than the normal rate. If your luggages are too heavy, you are no choice, then you should start bargaining, any trip within Kuala Lumpur City should not over RM15. Make use of the public transport, i.e LRT, it is a LRT station right behind puduraya, study to route, if your destination is close to any LRT station, it cost you not more than RM4.Another way to avoid "cut throat", away from Puduraya, hire those running taxi or Q at the taxi station near Kotaraya, instead those stopped roadside do compare the different and decide yourself.

Hiring a driver - not a good idea

by Cl1

If you plan on hiring a driver to tour you around, which is economically viable, this driver won't take you where you ask to be taken. Instead, he'll stop at every single one of his friend's local shops or rubber factories. It's really annoying - no matter how firm you are, or how insistant that you absolutely refuse to go anywhere except for where you ask, it doesn't matter - you'll still end up nowhere that you want to be anyway. All we wanted was to go to the rice paddies - we tried five times and didn't get there once. Alternatively, I would rent a car, buy a map, and hope for the best.
