The jungle train.One wacked...

by D_Shannon

The jungle train. One wacked out guidebook suggests that the views from the day jungle train are 'superb'. Yeah, right. Look, the first hour is fun and you get to see lots of greenery flashing by, but by the 5th hour you're a bit bored and by the 12th hour you'd like to slit your wrists because you realize that you've wasted a perfectly good day on a rather boring, rattling, hot train. Take a bus or take a night train, unless you have an awful lot of time to kill. There were quite a few tourists on the train (we all had the same guidebook) and we were all disappointed. Oh yeah, here's another thing our guidebook didn't mention: if you take the day train you're going to get stuck in a little crappy town which doesn't even appear on some maps. The train pulls in around 7pm but the connecting train for Singapore doesn't show up until 2am and there are no evening buses on to Melaka so you...

by worm_star

ALWAYS BARGAIN. When you go to stalls for souvenirs or something, do be careful as some would mark up the original price. This happens especially when you go to markets or anywhere likewise. Remember, never fall for it.

by earthtrek

PETALING STREET (fraud market)Know this folks, no matter how much the stall owners try to convince you or how genuine th products look, DKNY tees, Rolex watches and CK perfumes arent sold on streetstalls in Malaysia. You need to go to a boutique for that. Most products sold at petaling Street are fake items. A rolex watch will be sold to you at RM500 only. I (being a local) would buy it for RM30. The same goes for everything else. So dont get fooled.

by Purd

Beware of touts, those guys trying to sell you bus tickets NOT at the ticket counters. Very prevalent at the PUDURAYA Bus Station in KL. I'm Malaysian, but I was sucked into this blood-suckers tactics. Wanted to go to Kuantan and DESPERATE too. So, I bought this ticket sold by these touts and guess what? We were suddenly aboard this old bus, no air cond, hard seat, even Intrakota buses look 'express bus' enough to me.

by Adrian_Loh

The taxis from the airport are a real killer, costing you a good US$50-$100 to get anywhere. Sometimes, it's better to go around in a large group so that the unit cost would go down. Also, if you don't mind cramping in little mini-vans, there are such vans operating between towns and villages. They are quite easily identified, with the names of the towns printed on the van.

In Kuala Lumpur in particular, the Taxi drivers are a pain. In many instances, they would simply rather go without work rather than take you someplace for a reasonable fare. Dont be afraid to turn one down and ALWAYS ask the fare before getting in. In many instances, I found they would quote you 200 - 300% of what it should cost, and if they couldnt rip you off, were just not interested in working.

by lostgweilo

Internet booking of hotels. This is not necessarily a Malaysia specific comment, but since Malaysia is where I got bitten, my Malaysia page is where I will grumble about it.I am talking here about the Concorde hotel and the Shangri La. They are one of these businesses who are into a 'me too' e-business program. Look the hotel up on the web, and you will find a perfectly well designed web site, with lots of information, and even an online room availability check and reservation feature. Depending on how much you expect, you may either say 'Quite impressive' or 'so what, all hotels have this anyway!'... Well, wait a second. When I checked the Concorde web site, I entered the details of my stay, and it showed everything fully booked. Again. (I had tried the same thing a week before and it was the same, all fully booked, so I ended up at the Shangri La). This time I didn't give up so easily:...

by lostgweilo

The usual suspects... Taxi drivers! They are not quite as bad as in some other Asian countries, but they can still be quite annoying. They are supposed to use the meter. But some of them, (like the ones on this picture) will just park outside a popular area, then wait and try to impose a fixed and expensive price on unsuspecting customers. Always insist on paying the meter price. Shame on these people who make a living out of tricking others!

by lostgweilo

The Internet Cafe at the airport! There are many in town and as of now (July 2002) they seem to charge 4 RM an hour. One exception is at the airport, where the internet access booth in the middle of the terminal charges... 12 MR an hour! Maybe that's because they are so prominently located, and display a lot of Samsung advertisements? I gave them a hard time about it.
