by kat_on_moray

When in East Malaysia a lot of tourist operators offer tours to visit the long houses of indigeous peoples such as the Iban - I didn't go but I know if few people who were sucked in and said that it was one of the most commercialised, horrifying experiences of their life and would never do it again. It is best not to support these types of tours as we are travellers and need to respect the indigenous cultures of the countries we are travelling in, not exploit them.

by floss1

Always check your bill in restaurants. Some will try to charge you more if you are a tourist. I was with some Malaysians and when the bill came they noticed it was not the right amount, so they asked for an itemised bill and it was about half less. So always ask for an itemised bill.

Do not expect to have...

by jasc_chia

Do not expect to have international roaming service through your mobile phone. For the locals, only TMTouch 013 can work there. So if you are going there for a few days, remember to inform your friends or parents that they will not be able to reach you. And there is no ATM machine for money withdrawal in the resort area! The only way to get cash is by credit card or rent a bicycle to the nearest village that takes about half an hour. So remember to bring enough cash! Not to forget my bad experience with the unfriendly staff. Always remember bring along the resit or the payment voucher upon check-in. Those staff at the counter were not taking initiative to check on what they have in the computer system. Me and my friend booked and paid everything but during that last minute, they told us that they have more chalet left. We don't even get the refund from them! I wished I can just attach the...

Native peoples.

by EricLe_Rouge

Tourists should bear in mind that today, thirty years after Sarawak received its independence, the native peoples remain the victims of an international political economy that is undermining their very existence.

by Icybeach

Of course you should be aware of the typical 'special prize for you, my friend'. Prizes are cheap, but you must haggle, you're expected to haggle. You could get things 50% cheaper by haggling. For those who don't know, on the markets you can see brand names like Nike, Adidas and all the popular ones, those are fake products. If you see a top that has Adidas name on it and you prefer Nike, ask if they have it in nike (the top will look exactly the same). CD's and DVD's are pirate versions - but good quality. They also come very cheap and you can haggle the DVD's but the CD's are a fixed price (10 RM).

by Audrey118

when you get into cabs, make sure you have some idea of where you are going. make sure the meter is on, and you have a rough idea of the fare. not all drivers are bad, but if you have experienced one in a couple of hundred of drivers is bad enough. if you coming in from international airport, always buy your taxi voucher that is available immediately after you come out of the custom check point. Do not take rides from private operators. they are not worth the savings nor worth the risk.

by JonsMum

DO NOT ENTER A TAXI UNLESS YOU ARE SURE THAT a METER IS BEING USED.some cabbies like to bargain prices with you before they take you there...if you are not sure of how much to pay do not take the taxi..i recommend the best way is to find a cab that is running on a meter anything else is unacceptable....you have to be firm with the drivers and dont be the innocent tourist......

by artful280

Sarawak Cultural Village is a tourist trap, there is no other way to describe it. It is a place which squeezes all the cultures of Borneo down into a sort of cultural zoo, with locals demonstrating their cooking , weaving and music skills in the type of houses that particular ethnic group live in.Saying this it is quite an enjoyable afternoon out, and the show is very good if you look at it from the point of view that is created for tourists and not really a true reflection of ancient skills.

by stcc

In Malaysia tourists are easily reconized so be careful you are not had when you buy something in China town ( the copy market )...Don't go buying a fake watch for 250 ringit for example... I spend 20 or 25 usually on a small gucci watch, so don't spend more on the same type of watch...Generally you should be able to divide the price by three to get a fair price. And also don't cross the border with more than two you look suspicious...More to come
