Borneo is not sophisticated enough to have traditional tourist traps -- they love tourists -- we were treated with respect.
You'll never want to leave the Perhentian Islands . . . so I guess that's a trap of sorts!

Be careful at taxi-drivers in Malacca. They ask more than 10$ for a short trip from bus station to your hotel. Fix the price before!
Compare the price before you buy anything.
Taxi driver - meter just for display only. negotiate the price b4 u decided to take. Many begger surround in JB. They're too lazy to work. Beware of pick pocket in city and also fade police.
