  • See my KL page for information on arrival at KLIA and how to go on from there!
The bus-system is excellent and efficient. Usually you should buy the ticket 1 day ahead, at special holidays try it even earlier! The fares are very good, by the way! The other very common mean of transport is the boat. Like that one on the photo (from Kuala Lipis to Kenong Rimba Park) or bigger ones for transport at sea.

    The fastest way to travel
  • Tip Rating:
  • The easiest way to get around Malaysia in a short period of time is to fly. When we first started to come to Malaysia the only airline that did domestic flights was Malaysia Airlines.
On our first visit we flew from Sultan Abdul Aziz Shah Airport located in Subang Jaya, Malaysia, to Penang. From Penang to Langkawi. From Langkawi back to Subang Jaya.

    BUSES IN MALAYSIA SUCK....BIG...
  • Tip Rating:
  • BUSES IN MALAYSIA SUCK....BIG TIME!

On my second visit to Malaysia, I was only there for 3 days. I went directly from Singapore to Tioman Island (though the bus connections were terrible - more later), where I became scuba certified in 2 days.

    Pics are in the travelogue...

While there is plane, train and ferry service from S'pore to Tioman Island, because of my late afternoon arrival, I only had one choice - the bus!

At the Pan-Malaysian express company (near Bugis MRT), I was told there were no seats left for another 2 days, so I had to head over to the Queen St. station to catch a bus to Johar Bahru. After waiting in a line that extended 2 1/2 blocks, plus paying for 2 seats because of my baggage, I finally got on and headed on my way. About an hour later I arrived at the border and as is customary at JB, my bus left and I had to grab another.

Unfortunately, by this time, factory workers had gotten off work and were cueing from here to eternity. I opted for sharing a cab service to the JB bus station. Upon arriving there, 3 different bus companies told me there were no more buses to my destination (Mersing) and this seemed to please the hustling cab drivers that were haranguing me. As a seasoned world traveler, I remained determined and ultimately found a bus to get me there (which was half empty).

From my initial difficulities in S'pore to my arrival in Mersing, took almost 7 hours - of which only 50% was time spent on a bus.

When I returned, I had reserved a seat on a charter bus, which headed directly from Mersing to Singapore. The bus was to leave at 12:30 and when I arrived at 12:22, I was told that it had already left, that it was full and that in fact, I had no reservation. (SS Servive Agency in Mersing). After growling and complaining that in fact I did have a reservation, that the bus had left early and that there should have been a seat for me...I was no further ahead. Plus, they were now saying that because I was a bad customer, they did not want to sell me a ticket on the 2:30 bus. YEESH!

Alas, I did get a seat on the 2:30 bus, but it was not without incident either. When I arrived at the border crossing, I told the driver where I wanted to get off in S'pore. At customs, Malays and Singaporeans are whisked through and for foreigners, we must cue up, complete a form and answer any questions. Well, it didn't take long but when I came out, I could see me bus pulling away. YEP - gonzo!!

Singaporean customer service was completely useless and could only tell me 'this happens all the time'. After exchanging some Malays dollars into Sing (at ridiculous rates), I paid for another bus to take me to S'pore. I was told it was the express, but in fact it was the 170 - not express. Take the 107 instead.

The buses had it in for me and made for rather frustrating travel. I have since spoken with other travelers and it seems the Malaysian bus service is notoriously pathetic, unreliable, a potential money pit and at least for one (not me)...unsafe.

    TRAVLERS BEWARE!!
Avoid SS Service Agency in Mersing. It was the blue one that left the S'pore customs without me!

    Air: Langkawi aiport at...
  • Tip Rating:
  • Air: Langkawi aiport at Padang Matsirat is about 20km from Kuah. You can fly in to Langkawi from Kuala Lumpur
and Penang by Malaysian Airlines or from Singapore direct by SilkAir.

Road: The journey takes about 8-9 hours drive from Kuala Lumpur to Kuala Kedah while to Kuala Perlis (also from Kuala Lumpur) the journey takes about 10 hours. For those who travel by car, tourist car parks are available at Kuala Kedah
and Kuala Perlis. Then board an express boat or ferry to Langkawi where local transport like buses, taxis and car rental are available at Langkawi Kuah Jetty.

Rail: Keretapi Tanah Melayu (KTM) provides comfortable and inexpensive rail service, from Kuala Lumpur to Alor Setar (Kedah) and Arau (Perlis). From Alor Setar/Arau you can take a taxi or bus to Kuala Kedah/Kuala Perlis and
from there by express ferry to Langkawi.

Ferry ScheduleThere is a luxurious high-speed ferry shuttle service providing scheduled crossings between the mainland: Kuala Kedah/Kuala Perlis and Langkawi (Kuah Jetty). The trip takes about one hour.

Take taxis or hire a car. Taxis are convenient means of transportation for travellers in Langkawi, available from taxi stands located at various part of Kuah town, hotels/resort, Kuah Jetty and at the airport. Langkawi taxis do not use meters. Visitors are advised to find out the fare before boarding depending on the destination travel. Or alternatively, like I used to arrange for hire van or car to take us to the places we want to visit. Discuss and agree on the fare and the no. of places you want to visit.

    Getting from one place to...
  • Tip Rating:
  • Getting from one place to another within Malaysia, you can either drive, take a comfy super VIP coach, or the train. You can also take the North South highway that runs passing numerous rubber plantation, oil palm plantations, rice plantations, etc from Johor Bahru (town just across the causeway from Singapore) to Bukit Kayu Hitam (a border shopping in Thailand), which you gotta pay for it.

    Fly to KLIA on Malaysian...
  • Tip Rating:
  • Fly to KLIA on Malaysian Airline. Fantastic service and comfy economy seats for long haul flights. Personal TV and games.
Buses are not very frequent. Taxis are cheap and faster and more comfortable than the buses. If you are not familiar with KL traffic, avoid driving. Take the comfy coach (super-VIP 21 or 24 seater coach, not the 48 seaters) for long distance journey. You can even have a good night sleep on the bus. Train is cheap too, and it passes by the rural areas but it takes longer than the bus.

Let me start with Kuala Lumpur...
  • Tip Rating:
  • Let me start with Kuala Lumpur :

    (1) Taxis - Wonderful mode of transport, reasonable and relatively cheap too ! However, make sure the meter is on once your journey starts. If you take a taxi AFTER the witching hour (ie Midnite), then your fare will be 50% in addition to the metered fare. Fare begins at RM2.

    (2) Light Rail Transit ('LRT') - There are 2 - the Star line and the Putra line. Both , coupled with feeder busses, makes travelling within KL fast and efficient.

    (3) Commuter trains ('Tren Komuter') - Great if you are travelling from out of the city. However, it only ends at 4 different locations.

    (4) Cars - Malaysia got a pretty good and extensive network of roads. Driving here is no main problem. However, be careful during rush hour - people can morph into monsters behind the wheel when stressed !

    (5) Public buses - The network of public busses is not too bad. However, it could take a while to get use to it (even me - and I LIVE here !! LOL ) but once u get the hang of it .. transportation can be dirt cheap.

    A long flight
  • Tip Rating:
  • We flew from the US to Narita, Japan (12 hrs) aboard American Airlines, from Narita to
Kuala Lumpur International Airport(8 hrs) on United Airlines.
I will never forget that second flight. We flew around a cyclone in the area and I thought the wings were going to fall off they shock so badly.

Take the ferry to Gayana Island
  • Tip Rating:
  • There is a ferry leaving the pier at Kota Kinabalu, several times a day for Gayana Island. You can make reservation and go out for the night or just go out for lunch and have a look around. It is a great place to get away to relax.
