Motorcyclists must wear helmets (buckled) and the headlamp light must be on 24 hours to reduce accident rates. Most cars do give motorcyclist the same leeway as another car. There are very few places with motorcyclist only lanes, mainly in Kuala Lumpur and Petaling Jaya areas. You may see children saddled between rider and adult back seat rider and not wearing helmets. This may seem tolerated but it is dangerous. Police are well known in stopping motorcyclists to check for driving license, motorcycle road tax permit (renewable annually) and condition of motorcyle like lights, braking lights, etc. Along some known "racing" track along the highway and in major towns, especially on weekend nights and early morning, there are many illegal racing. These are often young Malay boys called "Mat Rempit" and do not seem to care much of their own safety and of others. They will stop when police shows up and than start again like a cat and mouse game. Theme: Motorcycle |

Effective January 15, 2007, all passengers using airports operated by Malaysia Airports Bhd will need to pay a security charge of RM6 for international flights and RM3 for domestic flights. The charge will added into air ticket cost. Good news that this extra security charge does not apply to tickets purchased prior to January 15. So fuel charge, airport tax charge and other surchage, I wonder what is next. Carbon emission charge? Theme: Airplane |

You can drive or take a bus on the East-West Highway connecting Gerik (Perak) to Jeli (Kelantan). From Penang, you can drive to Sungei Petani and then turn to Baling (Kedah) and towards Gerik. From Ipoh, there is a route from Kuala Kangsar to Gerik although more narrow and winding. The scene is spectacular of jungles. Do stop at Banding Island at the reservoir lakeside for coffee and enjoy the view there. Do watch out for changing road repair or conditions. Theme: Car/Motor Home |
Buses are the most convenience way to get around Malaysia. Go to some rural villages & you can see kids would welcome you & say "hello". Puduraya Bus Station is the point where you can get tickets to various big & small destinations around Peninsula Malaysia. Even bus tickets to some destinations in south of Thailand & Singapore, could be purchased here as well. Nevertheless, please check the time tables. It's not compulsory to but the bus tickets earlier but you never know when the public holidays are in Malaysia & local people would want to 'balik kampung', literally means 'going back to hometown to see families, lovers, fiancees etc'. you get the idea. Trains are also convenience within Malaysia. It's not the best way because there are many amazing places do not even have a train station. Like Melaka State for example. Only choose trains if you want to be comfortable on the overnight journey to your destination; if you think sleeping on the night bus is not your style. Leave a Comment Theme: Train |
Decades ago, it is common for school children to bicycle to school. Now it in major cities like Kuala Lumpur, Penang, etc, it is rare because traffic is so heavy, I consider bicycling unsafe. There are not enough space for bicyclists on the roads and so a bicyclists have to "fight" for space with lorries, buses, cars and motorcyclists. Of course, there are smaller towns and less travelled roads where it will still be a joy to bicycle around. Unlike in some countries, cars here do not expect cyclists to be riding in the opposite direction to the flow of traffic. So do not do so in Malaysia. Most cyclists I see these days are mountain biking enthusiasts and well equiped with safety helmets and know how. Bottomline: Not advisable. Theme: Bicycle |
While using the North South Highway (PLUS) in Peninsular Malaysia, the "Touch N Go" card is a convenient top up card where you can just swipe at the toll booth or going across Penang bridge. It can also be used on LRT in Kuala Lumpur and other applications. The card can be topped at selected booths (Tambah Nilai), selected PLUS stations, ATMs and petrol kiosks. The lines of Touch N Go are shorter. There is also "SMART Tag" where scanners is used. |
