by richiecdisc

We took a local bus from Singapore to Johor Bahru, a town on the Singaporean side of the border, and hopped on a short local bus into Malaysia. Went through Immigration, changed money and got a bus to Malacca from there. I think we saved about $5 by not taking the express bus from Singapore to Malacca. An interesting experience I'd skip next time. ;-)Buses are certainly the cheapest way to get around and most extensive too. But around town, much more fun to use a trickshaw, as this one in Penang.

I flew with Malaysia Air who were very good on the whole. But be warned, specifiy that you want non smoking as we were stuck in the back of a full plane on the return leg which was full of smokers, and no travel has never made me so ill than sitting there unable to escape for 10 hours.

Well, to get to an island, you take boats. Mersing is a good place to board a boat to bring you to various off-shore islands.Just beside the information bureau, you can purchase tickets to board 'regular' boats for various destinations. You can also book accomodations for a couple of resort on said island.

I'm going to spend some time now talking about the DRIVING situation here in Malaysia. Malaysians and foreigners who have driven in this country would surely be able to relate to the difference between “driving” and “driving in Malaysia...esp. K.L.”. While Malaysians are generally warm, friendly and mild-mannered people, some of them DO undergo a SHOCKING transformation the minute the engines of their cars are revved up! I've since noticed that there are basically TWO kinds of driving personalities. Ready to listen to them?? The Formula One / Kiasu drivers. These folks are ALWAYS in a hurry. They are Aryton Senna reincarnated! Narrow roads and on-coming traffic will NOT deter these daredevils as they overtake left and right and then, right and left... in their rush to go God-knows-where!! Cutting queues, beating traffic lights, double-parking and honking at slower cars are a way of life...

by Krystynn

To get to these magical islands, you can either choose to take a bumpy ferry ride or hop onto one of these propeller planes to reach your respective destinations (see photo below). These island airports are usually VERY small... and so are the planes used! :-((( O.K., you can start praying now... :-))Photo below: The small airport at PULAU TIOMAN. If you need to travel from one state to another, interstate cabs are both inexpensive and fast to travel (compared to taking the public bus). You can find this cab stand in Kuala Lumpur, located on Level 2 of the Pudu Raya Bus Terminal (just in case you're toying with the idea of taking one!). Fares for interstate cabs are fixed. Meters are NOT used. Ah, but the city cabs are metered though. In Kuala Lumpur, cabs are easily recognizable by their yellow and black colour or the new red and white colour. The starting fare is RM2 (that works out to...

by LCF

The airport is very cool, taking the bus from there is a lot cheaper if you know where you want to go, or else get a taxiBuses are slow but serves everywhere, the kommuter will take you to most places only, then you have to take bus, if you can afford it, take a taxi. Bus drivers are sometimes very scary... numbers on them not clear, ie you have to find out which no. goes where

You can get there by plane....

by Go-again

You can get there by plane. But I think a good option is by bus from Singapore. Stay a night or two in Singapore, to get used to the climat in a clean and 'western' surrounding. Taxi's are availlable everywhere and you can get a good price (bargain!)The taxi is not always a new and good car.... We had one where the door was tied with a rope, and one where smoke came out of the dashboard. But we always came on our destination. The busy traffic is to chaotic to drive yourself , I think it is to dangerous.

North South Highway: Malaysia...

by Gnome

North South Highway: Malaysia has a relatively new highway which goes from the southern border with Singapore up to the northern border with Thailand. This makes travelling along the west coast very convenient - easily done in a full day. The road is completely functional and extremely boring, except for if you run into a big thuderstorm. I can guarantee you will never want to see another palm oil tree in your whole life.

by S_R_NAIDU

Take a SBS bus from Singapore to Johor Baru. Cross the CAUSEWAY to Johor Baru (Malaysia). After Customs inspections/checkings at the Checkpoint, the bus proceeds to Larkin Bus Terminus. You must make a switchover and book a seat for a direct bus to Melaka from Larkin Bus Terminus. Taxis are available from Johor Baru to MELAKA. Buses or Taxis operate from from Kuala Lumpur to Larkin in Johor Baru.Bus, Taxi and Car.

We flew into Singapore from Australia and then went by bus to Johar Bharu across the road bridge. You go through customs TWICE! No hassles at all and if you miss the bus there is always one coming along in about 10 minutes, so do not leave anything on the bus as you go through customs.Bus. It is so cheap and you see lots along the way. Don't be put off with the bus drivers road sense! They do take a few risks but it's all part of the fun!Train. From Kuala Lumpur up the west coast is great, heaps to see.
