Traffic Signs in Malaysia

by SLLiew

Traffic signs are universal. There are a few in Malay which is worth hilighting."AWAS" = Caution (Not "Asian Women are Sexy")"BAHAYA" = Danger"BERHENTI" = Stop"IKUT KIRI" = Keep Left (Kiri=left, Kanan=right)"MASUK" = Entry"KELUAR" = ExitNo left turn allowed when traffic light is red.U-turn may or may not be allowed at traffic light.

Bicycling in Malaysia

by SLLiew

Decades ago, it is common for school children to bicycle to school. Now it in major cities like Kuala Lumpur, Penang, etc, it is rare because traffic is so heavy, I consider bicycling unsafe. There are not enough space for bicyclists on the roads and so a bicyclists have to "fight" for space with lorries, buses, cars and motorcyclists. Of course, there are smaller towns and less travelled roads where it will still be a joy to bicycle around. Unlike in some countries, cars here do not expect cyclists to be riding in the opposite direction to the flow of traffic. So do not do so in Malaysia. Most cyclists I see these days are mountain biking enthusiasts and well equiped with safety helmets and know how.Bottomline: Not advisable.

Riding motorcycles in Malaysia

by SLLiew

Motorcyclists must wear helmets (buckled) and the headlamp light must be on 24 hours to reduce accident rates. Most cars do give motorcyclist the same leeway as another car. There are very few places with motorcyclist only lanes, mainly in Kuala Lumpur and Petaling Jaya areas. You may see children saddled between rider and adult back seat rider and not wearing helmets. This may seem tolerated but it is dangerous. Police are well known in stopping motorcyclists to check for driving license, motorcycle road tax permit (renewable annually) and condition of motorcyle like lights, braking lights, etc.Along some known "racing" track along the highway and in major towns, especially on weekend nights and early morning, there are many illegal racing. These are often young Malay boys called "Mat Rempit" and do not seem to care much of their own safety and of others. They will stop when police shows...

Getting There and About by to Malacca

by keeweechic

Air : Malacca has a small airport situated in Batu Berendam, 9 km away from town By Sea : Malacca has ferry services one way and return to Dumai ( Indonesia ) which departs daily. By Coach : Singapore Express daily runs hourly service to Malacca, the earliest being at around 8 am, and the latest at 5 pm.Trishaws : The best way to enjoy Malacca in a slow and relaxed manner. The trishaw will transport you through streets and lanes of Malacca which you might miss if you tried to get about on your own. The trishaw can be rented wither on whatever distance you cover or on an hourly basis and they are available at The Stadthuys. River Cruise : There are a lot of charming discoveries of Malacca by taking a cruise down the river. One spot of this river was used in the “Entrapment” movie.

Getting There and Around K.L

by keeweechic

The Subang/Sultan Abul Aziz Airport is Kuala Lumpur domestic Airport and is 22kms (14 mls) west of the city. The Kuala Lumpur International Airport is at Sepang 50km (31 mls) south of Kuala Lumpur.Taxis are pre-paid, the amount being determined by the city zone of your destination. You can purchase your ticket from the booth outside the arrival hall and then present it to the driver. A trip to the city will take approx 30 - 45 mins (unless the traffic is bad).Express buses : run between KLU and Nilai, Kuala Lumpur, Subang and Shah Alam. They are available from 5 A.M. to 11 P.M. daily, and can be boarded at Block C of the car park. The trip takes up to two hours (in heavy traffic).Public transport services in Kuala Lumpur are provided by conventional buses and by 'Bas Mini' fixed-route minibuses.Taxis and pedi-cabs (trishaws) are licensed by the Government and fares can vary, but the 'Bas...

private TAXI

by nsbm

Just outide KLIA at any time of day you can get a private air-con taxi to anywhere in Malaysia and even to Singapore! The price is paid at the desk inside and you present the pre-paid voucher to the driver. It cost MYR80 = £12 to go to Port Dickson 65km away...comfortable drivng on well paved and not to busy hihgways. Best and most convenient way to travel really. The next day we bargained with the same driver to take us in our own time to Melaka from PD then to pick us up the following day early am to go to KLIA from Melaka1 A total of 320km cost only MYR200! Of course a non-air-con car if you like beig in a swelterin sauna is even less!HOWEVER its more convenient and cheaper to take the KLIA EXPRESS to downtown than a taxi from the Airport

KLIA

by nsbm

Kuala Lumpur International Airport is the center for both International and Domestic arrivals and departures. Spic and span the airy terminals with sweeping ceilings and hints of islamic montages is easily navigable and user friendly..as usaul all signs are in English and Malay. The domestic carriers we used were Malaysian which internationally code shares with KLM and Air france and is part of the Sky Blue team...hint if you area Sky Blue member travelling with KLM only part of your miles, as littlle as 25%! will be recognised depending on the fare type...with Air france they credit the whole distance...check before you book. Air Asia via there website also has great web-deals with connecting flights to most of southeast asia...so if you have time to explore the region this is as good as any.

New terminal at KL

by TonyBagnall

Be careful if you need to make a connection between the new Airasia LCC terminal and the internatonal terminal in Kuala Lumpur KLIA. LCC is described as a terminal of KLIA, but in fact it is a separate airport and there are very poor transport links between the LCC and KLIA. The privately run bus may take you over an hour, there is only one bus (costs 1.5 myr each), so if its just left you are left with a long wait. We had to do this twice, first time caught the bus, waited 15 minutes then bus took 15 odd minutes. Second time it had just gone, so we got a cab costing about 40 myr, which was almost more than our airasia flight! This may get sorted, we were travelling in May 2006 and the terminal had just opened. It should be, because the whole arrangement is shambolic!
