Getting Around West Malaysia...via Rail

by urchinn

The KTM (Keretapi Tanah Melayu) railway runs the entire length of mainland West Malaysia, connecting Singapore at the South and Thailand at the North. There are 3 classes - 1st, 2nd and 3rd - the best part being that all coaches are fully air-conditioned.You can book or buy e-tickets online and print it out for use as valid issue.

Travelling within Malaysia

by xuessium

It can be quite economical to fly within Malaysia due to the presence of a local no-frills budget airline: Air Asia. There are great deals to be reaped from time to time. The National Airline, Malaysian Airlines (MAS) also flies internal routes, so it is also worth the trouble to take a look since MAS has been forced to lower its prices to face competition from Air Asia. There are some smaller private airlines, operating only certain routes. Berjaya Air for example, flies out from Kuala Lumpur to some of the islands on the east coast - Pulau Tioman & Pulau Redang.

Inter-state express buses ... passenger complaints

by matt_KL

A recent headline in The Star (a major daily newspaper). http://thestar.com.my/news/story.asp?file=/2006/3/20/nation/13688647&sec=nationI travel quite a bit around the country in these buses .. these remarks are very true for most of the trips. I would also like to add that contrary to one of the remarks, the air-conditioning can get extremely cold, so u might wanna take a jacket with u. This has also been reported in the Lonely Planet Guide Book.

Beware Malaysian Traffic Police

by annakonda

Driving to and from and within peninsular Malaysia is not diffult. On the toll highways one has to watch for jaywalkers (!) and road works (they are bad about posting early warnings of lane closures). So it is best to drive in broad daylight. What you need to watch out for especially if you are driving a foreign registered vehicle is the traffic police road blocks; when you are pulled over and stopped it is because they really want you to hand over some money to take care of the fine - in Johore state you are usually told that you have been doing 127 kmh in a 110 kmh zone, even if you have not been speeding! The cop is usually polite and chatty and will tell you that he has to issue a speeding summons for Ringgit 300. How you proceed from there is up to you, but it is best to have some ringgit handy (do NOT flash a bundle!) which in the ensuing discussion of how he could help you, you hand...

Take a cruise

by kyoub

If you would really rather be on a ship cruising around the sea, you can do that also.Star Cruises has 3 day tours between Langkawi, Pucket, and Singapore. The ship can be seen at the end of the pier at the Awana Hotel in Langkawi. We saw the ship but since we didn't have the time for a cruise we didn't go aboard.

Ride the express ferry

by kyoub

When you are in Kota Kinabalu or Labuan you can travel on the EXPRESS KINABALU ferry between the two island. It is a great day trip if you have some time to spare. It takes a good 3 hrs for the crossing. Cost RM 36 each way.You can also travel to Brunei from Labuan. We did this also and it takes about an hour.

See the sights by auto

by kyoub

The roads are in very good condition and well marked. Some places we rented a car and drove our selves. Langkawi is very easy to drive around. Penang is a different story. It is crazy traffic so we always took a taxi.Actually the first time we were on Langkawi it was during the Chinese New Year and all the cars were already leased out when we arrived. A lady that worked for one of the leasing companies there at the airport, rented us her personal car for a few days.In the picture it is the red one on the right side. The other picture is a rent car that we had on our return visit.
