The orang-utan's decline...
  • Tip Rating:
  • The orang-utan weighs an average of 50 kg (110 lb), although it can weigh over 90 kg (200 lb). It lives in different types of rainforest, where it eats mostly fruit, leaves and insects. The orang-utan is arboreal and diurnal. It exhibits a sophisticated use of tools for gathering food. An orang-utan utilizes twigs and branches to construct a large nest-platform in a tree that it sleeps in at night.

Adult orang-utans are generally solitary, except when a male and a female are together for mating. The home range of an adult male usually overlaps the ranges of several adult females. Most animals in a given area appear to maintain a loose relationship, although adult males are hostile to one another. A single young is usually born about every six years.

The orang-utan was once found throughout Indo-China, Malaysia and north to China. In historical times it has only been known from Sumatra and Borneo. About 100 years ago it was present in most of the rainforest areas on these islands; however, it was never found in large numbers. It has declined drastically since then. The major causes of the orang-utan's decline have been 1.) in the past, capture for the pet and zoo trade, especially the capture of young, which usually involved killing the mother; and 2.) habitat loss, especially through permanent conversion to oil-palm plantations and for logging.

    Tropical Heat and Humidity
  • Tip Rating:
  • The tropical heat and humidity can be oppressive, so it is advisable to carry a lot of bottled water. Sunscreen is useful as well.

Kuala Lumpur is a very clean and safe city. I felt perfectly safe wandering the downtown areas late at night.

For those at MidValley area, do check out the restrooms at The Gardens. They are pleasant with nice ambiance and a modern fresh look (check out the pink walls!) Besides nice wash basins, they also have those modern automated hand dryers that you get in Tokyo restrooms, but unfortunately, I found that most people here don't seem to know how to use them.

For those around Ikano / Ikea & The Curve area, I found the Curve toilets amongst the cleanest-especially on the higher floors.

    Avoid eating wildlife meat
  • Tip Rating:
  • In a few specialty restaurants, wildlife animal meat is served as dishes. As the meat are taste like chicken or beef, why patronized if this may lead to further endangering the survival of Malaysian wildlife.

Would like to qualify that ostrich, quail are bred. Also the aborignal tribes have the tradition of hunting wildlife for their own consumption and survival.

But as tourists and KFC diners, we should avoid ordering wild pig, deer including mousedeer, fruit bats, snakes, squirrels, monkeys, monitor lizards and pangolins.

Years ago, encountered a wild pangolin entering the house. It is a scaly Malaysian anteater that will coil up into a ball when threatened. Let us do our small part to preserve the pangolins in the wild. Leave them alone.

    Cameron Highlands - winding road
  • Tip Rating:
  • At the foot of the hills you start the ascent and unless its changed, I would say hang on to your lunch. It is a very steep and windy road.

On the way up cars were stopped on the side of the road with their occupants bent at right angles inspecting the grass (or was that their lunch? yuck). It really was very windy but well worth the trip. Along the way are interesting sites so you don?t have to do the drive all in one go.

    Country Driving
  • Tip Rating:
  • It was not unusual when I was there on several different occasions to see a whole family (baby included) loaded onto a motor scooter.

I even saw someone holding on to a wheelbarrow and towing it behind a scooter. Just be mindful on the roads, not everyone drives by the road rules.

    Drug Trafficking
  • Tip Rating:
  • Malaysia firmly enforces its strict drug laws and their legislation imparts a mandatory death penalty for those convicted of drug trafficking. Any person who is arrested with 15 grams (1/2 ounce) of heroin or 200 grams (seven ounces) of marijuana in their possession are alleged by law to be trafficking in drugs.

    Beware of the monkeys
  • Tip Rating:
  • Near monuments and temples, you often find these monkeys. They are accustomed to people, come to you for some food but can be very aggresive too.
