Last Day Sale

by SLLiew

Of course, this is a common sales gimmick everywhere by some shops that it is clearing stock, moving sale or last 3 days left. Sometimes the sale is genuine. There are a few China porcelain sales which are cargoed by local businessmen and manned by Mainland Chinese. They will from location to location, different shopping malls or different towns. So it may be true that it is the last 3 days but they will show up with the same stock at a different location and will be back again.

Avoid eating wildlife meat

by SLLiew

In a few specialty restaurants, wildlife animal meat is served as dishes. As the meat are taste like chicken or beef, why patronized if this may lead to further endangering the survival of Malaysian wildlife. Would like to qualify that ostrich, quail are bred. Also the aborignal tribes have the tradition of hunting wildlife for their own consumption and survival. But as tourists and KFC diners, we should avoid ordering wild pig, deer including mousedeer, fruit bats, snakes, squirrels, monkeys, monitor lizards and pangolins.Years ago, encountered a wild pangolin entering the house. It is a scaly Malaysian anteater that will coil up into a ball when threatened. Let us do our small part to preserve the pangolins in the wild. Leave them alone.

DVD sellers on the streets

by maffustan

Not so much a danger and not on the scale you get in other parts of Asia such as Thailand but in most large towns you are always getting hassled by people selling DVDs on the streets. Films are highly censored by the government and as a result there is a massive pirate dvd industry. Many of the dvds that I watched in the hostels were of very low quality!!!

Naming your price

by SLLiew

One of the tricks by the sellers in bargaining is asking what price you would want to pay for? This is a deadly question for if the seller agrees to the price you named, you are expected to buy the item. For example, a T-shirt. Seller: 10 rinngitYou: Too expensive, can you give me cheaperSeller: How much do you want it for? You: Eh... 9 ringgit?Seller: OK (with a big smile)Perhaps if you bargain, you could get the T-shirt for 5 ringgit. So unless, you are willing to buy at that price, do not name your price.Seller: How much do you want it for? You: What is the cheapest you can give me?Seller: 10% discount, 9 ringgit. You: If I want, I will come back later.

TAXIS in Malaysia

by daddygila

Before I arrived in Malaysia for my one month stay I read in a major Travel guide that the author wished that Taxi Drivers in KL should have their tires slashed. I was rather shocked to see that in print. After traveling there I would add..."Forget their tires....go for their throats...!!!!" Having traveled many places in the world, being ripped off by a Taxidriver is not news. HOWEVER the breed in Malaysia has to be the very worst. Unfortuneately there will be times you MUST get a taxi since there will be no alternative to get to where you want to go.In one month not ONE single driver put on their meter, and acted like deaf mutes. I found the majority not only thieving , but for any practical purposes lazy and completely useless. SERVICE is definitely NOT in their vocabulary.

Drug Trafficking

by keeweechic

Malaysia firmly enforces its strict drug laws and their legislation imparts a mandatory death penalty for those convicted of drug trafficking. Any person who is arrested with 15 grams (1/2 ounce) of heroin or 200 grams (seven ounces) of marijuana in their possession are alleged by law to be trafficking in drugs.

Deforestation

by DanielF

Malaysia, both the peninsular part as the States of Sabah and Sarawak hosts some of the oldest rainforests in the world, since they were not affected by the glacial eras. When you fly over the huge forests of Borneo you may think that the green mass is endless...But it is not. In fact, these forests, a real treasure of biodiversity, are highly endangered.

Watch out!! Whang!!!

by muddybok

The terrain will be changing very quickly during raining season. Some irregular erosion will happen & creating big hole in the middle of the trail. The fast growing ferns will make the trail more dangerous. Please take my advice for using harness, helmet & tight down your cargo as explain in my Pahang page.

Spikey Fruits!

by Rhii

Two breakdowns, one tyre change and a long dusty wait later, my friends and i ended up in a small village bus station. We weren't dressed appropriately (as, usually, the small villiages are very much Muslim and not used to western styles of dress) and an easy target for the men hanging around. As we were sitting with the bags, one of the men came up to my friend Juian and asked him to open a fruit for him - it looked like a big nut, with an opening in it - so Jules (being the nice guy he is) puts his thumbs in the hole and tries to prise it open. Only to find that the inside if the shell was a fur of cactus-like spines! Not good. So, just a word of warning; if any one asks you to open a starnge looking fruit for them, don't.We laugh about it now, but at the time, Jules had quite a job trying to tweezer the tiny spines out of his thumbs!
