Spikey Fruits!

by Rhii

Two breakdowns, one tyre change and a long dusty wait later, my friends and i ended up in a small village bus station. We weren't dressed appropriately (as, usually, the small villiages are very much Muslim and not used to western styles of dress) and an easy target for the men hanging around. As we were sitting with the bags, one of the men came up to my friend Juian and asked him to open a fruit for him - it looked like a big nut, with an opening in it - so Jules (being the nice guy he is) puts his thumbs in the hole and tries to prise it open. Only to find that the inside if the shell was a fur of cactus-like spines! Not good. So, just a word of warning; if any one asks you to open a starnge looking fruit for them, don't.We laugh about it now, but at the time, Jules had quite a job trying to tweezer the tiny spines out of his thumbs!

Snatch Thieves

by l_joo

Some 40 years ago, the Japanese invented low cost motorbikes to make money, these motorbikes (from 50cc to 125cc) sold like hot cakes 40 years continuously especially in South East Asia. It cost less than US$700 each, affordable by all low income Malaysian. In the 80s, some people bought these low cost motorbikes to illegally race on street, they spent just a little to modify the engine to make the engine extremely loud, they hope everyone can hear them riding. In the 90's some peoples began using these low cost motorbikes to earn money through snatching women's handbags, they rode the bike whole day to make living. (Picture, example only) is a photo taken at a random Kuala Lumpur's highway, this is a photo to tourists to show how they rode the bike to snatch handbags. Be careful. Also please wear helmet when riding motorbike, peoples in picture are riders trying to challenge law, they...

Snakes

by kyoub

Malaysia has around 100 species of land snakes. It may be reassuring to know that only 16 are poisonous. Well maybe not very. The most feared venomous snake is the king cobra. All 20 species of their sea snakes are poisonous.Luckily for us we did not see any of these snakes except in Penang. Then the snakes were in cages.

Hot climate

by ant1606

The climate near the equator is something memorable. High humidity and high temperature make it difficult to bear for those who are not used to such conditions.I found it really uncomfortable and, whenever possible, it is advisable to take a break.

Too Many Flies !!

by gnh

You might not want to share your food with these lovely adorable creatures who always snuggle up to you ...Anyway you don't get cholera or typhoid in Malaysia, so you don't have to worry about them, except when they get on your nerves !Very common in rural areas, especially the farming places. You just have to live with them.Resistance is FUTILE.

Road Signs

by gnh

If you drive, do be careful when you see a direction sign - it could lead you to the wrong place.Don't know who put them up, but they really lack accuracy, creativity and usefulness. The signs are a common subject of complaint -- ask any Malaysian driver. The sign attached was valid 50 years ago before the bridge at Bota Kiri was built. Now no one goes to Ipoh via Beruas ( coming from Lumut ) unless they want to enjoy the scenery along the detour.

Durian and Mangosteen

by xuessium

Many hotels in KL disallow occupants to bring durians and/or mangosteen to their rooms.REASONS:Durian - controversy - some folks find the smell/scent repugnant, reminding them of dead carcasses/clogged sewers/cheese gone horribly bad and in some cases, all those mentioned.Mangosteen - not so much for the smell (it practically has none) but for the stain it creates on linen and clothings. Purple sap arising from breakage of the outer husk (to extract the sweet interior) is one of the most frustrating stains to remove.

Watch out for wildlife!

by ant1606

Malaysia hosts one among the oldest rain forest on Earth. And, as we assumed, it teems with abundant poisonous or dangerous wildlife. We saw most insects, including spiders the size of a fist, and reptiles in the forests of Borneo and Taman Negara national park. But not only there. If you visit Malaysia and, like us, choose the region for its virgin places, you might want to get the most experiences out of nature. For most people, familiar home environment is probably different. But in Malaysia you should watch over your shoulders and in your bed sheets. We closely encountered the snake in the picture in our chalet in Damai Lagoon, Sarawak. Not sure it was a poisonous one but, after enjoying the sight of this splendid reptile, we gently had it leave our dwelling. For its safety and for ours.

Airport comfort....or not?

by ant1606

In our experience, airports around the world provide a certain confort while waiting for boarding at the gate.In Malaysia we experienced a different situation at Kuala Lumpur (KLIA), Johor Bahru (Senai) and Kuching (Sultan Ismail) airports. Departure gates, featuring comfortable seating, are opened 15 minutes prior to boarding. Passengers can only look at the empty chairs and otherwise stand, sit on the floor or walk around. We felt particularly sorry for those families with kids and for the elderly or anyone caring for a place to rest.

Dirty Toilets !

by gnh

Don't go into toilets and begin doing your business only to find out that there is no tissue paper! Even in toilets that look great and welcoming. Many locals use their hands/water to clean up, so you could try that.Otherwise, bring your own tissue paper ! And then hope the toilet is not blocked !
