Ladies Be Careful !

by gnh

In certain locations, ladies are advised not to travel alone, especially in the Muslim heartland of Trengganu and Kelantan. Not only are you courting trouble, you have to endure even official harassment - the police will not bother to help you. Stay away, or be prepared to cover up dress-wise.

I Know Your Legs Are Beautiful, But ........

by gnh

Even though female legs look beautiful, they are advised to keep it covered.Reason No 1 - Lots of mosquitoes around Reason No 2 - In many places of Malaysia, you'll be the centre of attraction. Muslim country you know. Ladies would have a little more to look out for ! When they go swimming, the girls just walk into the water fully clothed !But you can wear your bikini in the proper swimming pools in clubs and hotels, and perhaps people won't mind, though many young guys still tend to ogle and drool.

Walking around the streets

by reezal

Malaysia is a very safe country but if u need to walk in dark or quiet streets its advisable to walk on the opposite direction of the traffic while walking on the street as this will reduce the chance of snatch handbag/camera and etc. Although, chances happening are slim, but its better to take care bfr it happens.

Handbag safety

by becky48

I loved Malaysia and Kuala Lumpur but you have to be very aware that handbag snatching is writhe there. Leave your jewellery at home or in the hotel safe with your passport so you don’t look rich. Carry only what you need in your bag, hold you bag close to your body with you hand on it and have it over the shoulder away from the road as a lot of the snatching is done as they come past you on their scooters. Be aware at all times even when in one of the street cafes that they are mostly opportunists and if your guarding yours they will look for an easier bag to snatch

Gambling is prohibited

by ngcsc

Malaysia as an islamic state, gambling is an illegal activity in Malaysian law, no matter in the public or indoor. (The only place for legal gambling is Genting Highland!!!)Sometimes you might see some family gambling or in the association's building, this is allowed by a different perception, but it is general against Malaysian law. When any friends invite to gamble involving money, just refuse to do so........ but card game for fun is o.k.....

Taxi Overcharges

by Scottyj36

Just a note. in KL if you use a taxi please make sure the driver will use his meter. If he offers a flat rate to where you want to go you will be overcharged. An example is when I left my hotel to go to the US Embassy I asked the hotel clerk how far away it was. He said a 5 minute drive. Well the first cab we hailed wanted to charge us RM30. I sent him on his way and 3 taxi's later one would use his meter and the metered fare was only RM5.This happend about 3 other times where if I accepted the flat rate I would have been overcharged. In essecne, make sure the taxi driver uses the meter.

Ladies watch out!

by bluepigsinthesky

Over the past 4 years, Malaysia has seen a rise in not only petty thefts but also rape-murder cases. These cases were targeted at locals yet, it is better to be safe than exposed. Take notice of the usual safety tips such as going out in pairs, and better still in a big group. Also, never get into a taxi if you're by yourself as many taxi drivers have been caught raping their customers. Always be careful with your drinks in bars as you don't ever want to get it spiked. This are the basic rules where ever you go, so adhere to it!

Beware for safety

by bluepigsinthesky

In the past 2 years, there has been a rise in petty thefts, the most common being snatch thefts, resulting in many deaths. The deaths are normally caused by handbags that are slinged across the chest, pulling the owner along with the thief(normally on a motorcycle). Preventive measures have been taken by officials, yet better to be careful in the event that it happens... hotspots for snatch-theives are on the streets of KL, though town areas are also vulnerable to attacks. If purse is snatched, let go, and quickly take note of the license plate, then report to the nearest police station.

Don't even think about DRUGS

by penpoison

The penalties for drugs trafficking and etc. are very high. I was told an interesting story about how serious the offense for illegal drugs are when I was in college by a malaysian roommate: An american was caught for drug trafficking by the Malaysian police. This carried the death penalty sentence there. The US embassy tried to have him extradited back to the US. The man did eventually come back to the US but in pieces. So don't even think about it!

Language barriers

by trvlhke

I can't really speak for all parts of KL, but I was a little far from the city center for work. I became quite greatful that I was with coworkers because it seemed that most restaurants we went to did not speak English. Having said that, in the city center (market, KL Towers, etc) seemed multi-lingual as did the Sunway Lagoon and the mall attached to it.
