For The Ladies
  • Tip Rating:
  • This may be a strange tip, but I just wanted to point out something to all ladies who're visiting Malaysia because I have noticed some travellers/tourists getting confused... In the Ladies toilets here, it's not like in Europe (i wish it was, it's a much faster system!!!) where the girls just queue in one line and then just go into any of the stalls/cubicles as they are vacanted, in Malaysia, girls pick a stall and queue up outside the individual doors. This has its disadvantages as it leaves you to the mercy of whoever is in the stall that you're waiting outside for... if they're in there half an hour, your queue ain't gonna go nowhere right!!! And about those hoses that you get in many public toilets... it's what some of us locals use to wash ourselves with! Toilet paper is a luxury if you can find any... drip drying is the order of the day, ladies if you don't have any, so remember to always have your own tissue paper!

    McDonald's
  • Tip Rating:
  • If you think I'm joking then you're wrong. Do you know how many McDonald's restaurants in only the area of Chinatown? Five, yes five McDonald's in just a Chinatown area. McDonald's is already part of our Lumpurese cultures undoubtedly. Let me count for you, one in the location opposite of S&M shopping mall, one at Jalan Panggong next to Purple Cane tea shop, one at the location nearby Lebuh Ampang, one at Kotaraya shopphing mall and one at Central Market. McDonald's has more than 50 locations in the city of Kuala Lumpur. Therefore I put it under our local cutom tips.

    Dress: Dresscode
  • Tip Rating:
  • You can wear whatever you want in KL but do be aware of certain places. The weather is roasting hot here and most people go around with khaki shorts(my fav!) and T-shirts but if you plan to visit the mosque or holy places, it would be more appropriate to wear something that err...cover up. No, you dont have to buy a burqa. Wear jeans or long pants instead of shorts.

    Language: language...
  • Tip Rating:
  • Malaysia, a multi-cultural, multi-race country and so English is widely spoken in most parts of Malaysia but knowing a few simple words in Bahasa Malaysia would be good. Chinese dialets like Cantonese, Mandarin and Hokkien are widely spoken too.

    Baby Makeup
  • Tip Rating:
  • Not sure why they do this, but I saw a couple babies at Batu caves like this: Head shaven and a kind of orange paste painted on their scalps... Guess it is either for religious reasons... or sun screen ??? ( you can see that I am quite the worldly traveler...)

    Festivals: Chinese New Year festivities
  • Tip Rating:
  • During the Chinese New Year season, lots of merry making is seen. It is usually around Late January to February month. Chinese love decking in red, eat mandarin oranges, have lion dances, and go out to have grand banquets. Many Chinese restaurants may have firecrackers, lion dances to offer..check out the time. We celeberate for 15 days, and we have this unique dish called Yee Sang (Raw Fish) - it is salad-y type of food. Yee means endless wealth and sang means life. And we would furiously mix the ingredients served in a platter and shout lou hei - symbolises prosperity and longevity

At The Dinner Table: Fingers - a Multi Tasking Tool
  • Tip Rating:
  • I would say eating with fingers is a malay and indian custom. Its awkward if you've never tried it before but somehow, food always taste better when you eat with your fingers...must be the chemical makeup on the skin, i think. However, over here, we only eat with fingers for certain kind of food - certainly when eating nasi lemak, malay mix rice and the various rotis and tosei. When it comes to chinese food such as noodles and such, we fall back to the fork and spoon or chopsticks. AT some malay or indian restaurant, it is the understanding that you'll be eating with your hands, therefore cutleries would not be provided... if you really need them, you'll have to ask for them. And...they would probably give you a pair wrapped in paper or a whole stack in a basket. No lessons in table ettiquette here.

Dress: What to wear - from a KL born gal
  • Tip Rating:
  • I am a KL born. Let me give a true guide of what to wear. In KL, there are some areas where you should avoid wearing too skimpy or sexy e.g Mosques and temples(showing respects)Chow Kit area and Petaling Street(to avoid being harass). Please don't be misguided that we wear our clothes till high up our neck or something. There are alot of locals and foreigners wear mini-skirts,short pants, hot pants, sleeveless, tight pants, tube while shopping etc. Is OK because it is hot! But hopefully you wear your bra and not provocative shirts or else you would want people to stare at you. I really think with such humid and hot weather, wearing a bra is much comfortable, unless you want your clothes to stick to your body and revealing your.....you know what i mean.

    Female drivers only
  • Tip Rating:
  • This is the advertisement I read in a shopping mall car park. As soon as I saw it I thought those special parks were larger to allow also to women to park without ruining other cars LOL, then my friend(female) explained to me that those parks were next to the entrance in order to allow women to enter the mall immediatly after they got out of the car so they would not risk going around the car park alone, so it was not for male's cars but for women security.
