This is one of the most facinating experiences during the visit to Malaysia. As Bahasa native speaker (which has similarity with Malay Language), we understand each other when we speak in Malay. Although after several times misscommunication with our Malaysian friends (some of similar words turn to be different meaning), we decided to speak in English.
Most of Malaysian speak excellent English, but I do love the dialect and the way “Malay” additional component add up into English. For example “ You arrange lah” and many other Malay-English mixing. It’s really interesting for me.

You....Awak, kamu, anda. Note : Nice and polite to use 'Saya' and 'anda'...avoid to use 'Aku' and 'Kamu' in the conversation, unpolite !!
Execuse me, which way to...? - Maafkan saya, sila tunjukkan arah ke....?.
Haw far from here ? - Berapa jauh dari sini ?
Malaysia, a multi-cultural, multi-race country and so English is widely spoken in most parts of Malaysia but knowing a few simple words in Bahasa Malaysia would be good.
Chinese dialets like Cantonese, Mandarin and Hokkien are widely spoken too.
