Telawi Street Bistro: Bangsar nitespot
  • Tip Rating:
  • Far from being an white elephant that is was when TSB first started out, its reinvention to being THE cocktail bar to see and be seen is quite an achievement - esp since Bangsar nitespots are a dime a dozen. Its a great place to meet old and new acquaintances for music and drinks and good company naturally!

Casual dressy - which basically means no singlets or slippers.

different areas covered here: Current Hotspots in KL
  • Tip Rating:
  • KL has these "all in one" places which cater for different tastes. 12 SI (http://www.twelvesi.com.my/) is the complex comprising Atmosphere (the techno joint), Bliss (more garage, R&B, various fusions of electronica), Bar Fly (sort of like Coyote Ugly with girls dancing on the bars) and cafes to hang out in. Other establishments in the area are Espanda, Nouvo/Sangria Bar, Beach Club & the opposite Thai Club (tourist meat markets... avoid at all costs!), Passion (nice!). Rum Jungle has also just opened up at the corner of Jalan Pinang and Jalan P. Ramlee. Could be gone 6 months later, let's see. Zouk is another "all in one" complex. (http://www.zoukclub.com.my/unveil/enter.asp#) Zouk is the large, techno joint, Velvet Underground next to it is the R&B etc. equivalent, then there's the bars and cafes if you just want to chill out. Bangsar around Jalan Telawi there are many places, cafes, bars, restaurants all in a row, - Bar Flam, Bar Ohm, BarZar (moroccan sit on cushions on floor), Bilique, Pharmacy, irish pubs like Finnegan's, spanish tapas bar La Bodega, etc... places come up and shut down again after 6 months and change names but these are the longer standing ones around... you'll find something you like surely. Bangsar Village is another mall full of nice restaurants in the area. The other hotspot in KL at the moment is the Asian Heritage Row. Here you'll find Bar Savanh (balinese type decor with a good restaurant IndoChine upstairs - salsa nights on Sunday), Bar Blonde is an all-white bar, Saray Turkish Restaurant and all sorts of other places to hang out here also. On the street right next to the Sheraton Imperial Hotel on Jalan Sultan Ismail. Other areas like Tengkat Tong Shin/Changkat Bukit Bintang, Bintang Walk on Jalan Bukit Bintang and Sri Hartamas in the suburbs of KL are also venerable hotspots with plenty of bars/ cafes/ restaurants/ clubs. I'll expand this tip or write separate ones for each of these areas at some point in time.

Most places don't really have a dress code and you'll be allowed in wearing everything or next to nothing. Maybe guys would want to avoid slippers and shorts though.

Finnegan's: What can I say more?

  • Sandy's 1st trip to Finns! - Kuala Lumpur
    Sandy's 1st trip to Finns!

Hahahah - Frank would absolutely KILL me should I not mention Finns - btw - tq for the flowers ol chap. Anyways, Finnegans Bangsar - (and Hartamas) is a must see for any traveller to KL. Its not in KL proper admittingly but its worth trip and a club hopping scene is brought to an art form here. Mind you, service can be a tad bit slow due to the amount of PATRONS! And where else do ladies drink for free on Sat's ???

Casual - from dressed to the 9's to flip flops - but mostly smart casual here.

    Bangsar: Bangsar
  • Tip Rating:
  • It's not very big in here but the bar is in the center. The DJ console is just at the corner and he plays some really good tunes. Drinks are reasonably priced. Ladies nites, every Wednesday.

    Beach Club Café: KL...
  • Tip Rating:
  • Some ppl tells me that it's more of a pick-up joint these days...have not been there for a very long time now. They use to play music from the 80's and then it slowly changes to house / techno later in the nite... Wear a white top and see what happends ! ;-)

    Little Havana: LITTLE HAVANA
  • Tip Rating:
  • Right at the tail end of Changkat Bukit Bintang ~ corner lot. Open atmosphere ~ not too noisy (if you want noise, just walk on abit and plonk yourself at one of the bars there), one can actually have decent conversations there :-p Huge TV screen (very useful these days when the RWC's on) with a pool table for those who are bored. Tables are scattered all over the (smallish) courtyard, enabling you to choose where you want to *hide*. On Friday nights, there is a great Salsa Party upstairs. Totally amazing vibe there. Everyone just wants to dance the minute you get up there. The crowd builds up pretty late (maybe after 11pm) and can get really loca when its crowded !! Its very infectious *grin* Drinks there are decently priced. Cocktails there are a killer !! Very potent ;-)

Casual smart (whatever that means) and a little dressy during Salsa Parties.

    Hard Rock Café: Something Familiar
  • Tip Rating:
  • What can I say - when traveling abroad and really missing home, 4 days is about my limit without meeting a fellow native english speaker , The Hard Rock Cafe is a welcomed find. With it's familiar food/menu you will not have to ask for any item descriptions and you're guaranteed to meet other travelers and even a few expats. Although in the evening apparently (per my new KL Expat friends) The Hard Rock is filled with girls for hire (a fact that not only had to be pointed out to me, but pr oven, LOL!!!) That being said, it's not as in your face as say Bangkok so it is still a great place to start your night.

    Casual
