The Forest Research Institue Malaysia (FRIM) is located in Kepong, about 30 minutes drive from KL. As a forest research institute, its offers plenty of information and hands on experience on the rain forest. Among its attraction and facilities are arboreta, extension garden, camping area, jogging trails, a forest museum, nursery, picnic area / waterfall, wetland area and its main attraction - the canopy walkaway. The canopy walkaway is located at about 300m above sea level, and was constructed in 1992 with aid from the German Agency for Technical Cooperation (GTZ). The walkway system spans about 200m and is suspended between trees at about 30m above the ground. The main species on which this system is suspended are Chukrasia tabularis (Surian batu), Intsia palembanica (Merbau), Prterocymbium javanicum (Melembu), Artocarpus elasticus (Terap nasi) and Scaphium spp (Kembang Semangkuk). The walkway system and the platforms are vantage points from which one experiences a panoramic view of the forest. Beside this, the walkway system functions as a platform for scientific study of canopy flora and fauna. The trail to the walkway is uphill, steep and pysically demanding. However, the view from the walkaway worth the trouble getting to it. Walking time, one way, is between 30-45 mins, depending on the route chosen, the group size and level of fitness. The average time taken for the round trip is 2 hours. Entrance fee: RM5 Adults RM3 Students (Age 13 onwards) RM1 Children (Age 7 - 12 yrs) Additional charge is levied for guided walks. Entrance to this walkaway system is by prior arrangement only. It is opened to the public from Tuesdays to Saturdays and 2nd and 4th Sundays of each month, from 10.00am to 2.30pm.
