The Bok House
  • Tip Rating:
  • Once upon a time in KL, there was a mansion in Jalan Ampang belongs to a wealthy man whose daughter was so deep in love with a less wealthy man - a bicylce trader. Obviously, the love affairs is not being approved by the girl's family and the marriage proposal from the bicycle trader was rejected and she was later married to someone else.

Heart broken, the bicycle trader worked hard to prove that the girl's family was wrong in rejecting him. He worked really really hard to prove himself, hard enough until he managed to build and own another mansion just accross the street from the mansion where the girl's family live.

The mansion is still standing until today and known to the locals as "The Bok House". Though it is no longer occupied and has been dwarfed by other skycrapers around it, it is still standing as prove of a man's undying love to a woman eventhough the other mansion accross the street has since been demolished.

Take a peek at the mansion from its outside if you happened to be in KL. Located just about 100 meter from the Petronas Towers, it is probably the closest answer that KL has for the Taj Mahal.

Update : The Bok house has since been demolished on 15/12/2006. What a pity and a big lost to KL.

One of the school that still stands tall in the city St John's Institution, located on Bukit Nanas and surrounded by Kuala Lumpur's skyscrapers. St John's celebrating its centenial annivesary this year (1904-2004).

The school is famous for its main block building - a red-brick building with Grecian-Spanish influences - which has been classified as a heritage building. It is the most elaborate school building in the city.

St John's was started when the federal capital's Catholic mission's efforts to set up a school for catholic boys came to fruition. Prior to that, Catholic boys attended either the Bukit Nanas Convent or the Victoria Institution (a rival school to St John's till this day), which was set up in 1893. Older boys attended the Victoria Institution, a Protestant school, much to the distress of Father Renard of the Catholic mission in Kuala Lumpur. He eventually collected enough money to build a school. On Jan 18, 1904, St John's had its first school day. Forty boys attended and the number grew to 100 within six months.

In the last 100 years, thousands of boys and girls - girls were admitted for Form 6 - from all walks of life were schooled at St John's. Royalty, children of prime ministers, politicians, merchants and civil servants went to school together. The school produced students who went on to make names for themselves in various fields. Indeed, the old-boys roll reads like a Who's Who of Malaysia.

    A day at the Spa
  • Tip Rating:
  • There are not many day spas in Kuala Lumpur. The better more established ones are usually at the 5-star hotels, with equal 5-star rates !

Totally stressed one day, I headed on to Ozmosis Health & Day Spa, over at cheerful Bangsar. To those who are familiar, its located just above La Bodega Deli.

Try the spa packages there - its awesome !

    jungle near the city
  • Tip Rating:
  • about 30 minutes drive up north away from the city lies the lush green forest of templer park.. this is a very popular place amongst the locals for a day out picnicing by the stream or for a weekend of outdoor camping.. one tip is to walk as far in as possible (we walked about an hour) to get away from the crowd and you'll be enveloped by the wonders of nature..

Dental Care in KL - Professional and good value
  • Tip Rating:
  • Lee & Tan Dental Surgery - Kuala Lumpur
    Lee & Tan Dental Surgery
    by Lalee
    Send Photo to a Friend
My last visit to KL was for one whole week so I asked some local friends where to go to have my teeth looked after. Well they directed me to the family dentist right on Bukit Bintang. Between all of us on holiday we had one crown done (RM700) one filling (RM80) and teeth cleaning (RM80 - RM132). I guess the teeth cleaning charge depended on how much work he had to do hahaha.

For people who have ever had their teeth done in NZ, this is well worth spending an airfare to go to KL and get everything done in one go.

In NZ a crown averages NZD$1000 - $1500.00. Fillings are about NZD$100.00 - $150.00 and an appointment with a dental hygienist will set you back about NZ $100.00.

So all of us were very pleased when we came home and have told any friends who will listen to us how cheap it is to get your teeth done in KL.

The person to see is Dr L.K. Teoh. All the staff speak English so that's a bonus. Details as follows:

    Lee and Tan Dental Surgery
Up the stairwell to the airconditioned clinic
    56A Jalan Bukit Bintang
    55100, Kuala Lumpur
    (Opposite the Malaysia Hotel)

You will see the green sign to the right of the picture above the van.

Might pay to call before you arrive to make an appointment. The crown will take just over a week to make after he takes the mold so if you want a crown go get your mold done asap.

    Keep smiling!

    Lalee
