  • Tong-Poh-Row is one of my favourite dish in Esquire Kitchen. The dish is made of pork which is certainly, not an Islamic food. The way of eating is to use our fingers to pick up the white bun and then make a hole in it while pick up some Tong-Poh-Row to insert into the bun and then use the spoon to pour in some of the dark sweety soup from the bow and bite.

A very busy spot on the corner of Jalan Imbi and Jalan Khoo Teik Ee. Jalan Imbi is the road that Times Square is on but heading to the direction of the Park Royal and the Ritz Carlton. They specialise in these desserts which are shaved ice with fruits and some sort of sweet sauce / sago liquid. They also serve fried and steamed snack items as well as a range of noodles.

Mango Loh RM5.30 Shaved ice topped with Mango Honey Dew Loh RM 4.80 Shaved ice topped with Honey Dew Melon Mat Toh Loh RM10.0 Shaved ice topped with all fruits - the big one

    Tamarind Springs Kuala Lumpur

I recommend Tamarind Springs as a restaurant for discerning travellers out there on their honeymoon, or even groups who want to eat Indochinese (Vietnam, Laos/Cambodian) food in beautiful, peaceful surroundings. There's also a bar if you just want to go for drinks. They do pickups from all major hotels in the city. It's in a wonderful hidden part of residential KL, surrounded by forest and a nearby golf course so it's very lush and green. If you go at night the pathway you see in the picture is lit by tealights all the way down the sides, but you don't see all this from the access road outside as the entrance is just a little doorway, the first glance as you enter and turn towards the path is magical! Tamarind Hill, a sister restaurant, is also very nice (you can find it on the website also) and a good alternative if you plan to dine on Monday when this one is closed. Prices are more than average for KL as it's targeted for upmarket clientele but comparable to other restaurants in its class. Bear with the waiters who may be a bit slow if they're busy, but the whole experience is worth it! Awarded 'Best Restaurant' 2003 (Tatler).

Sample menus are available on the website. The waiter's recommendations were all good. Can't remember most of the names but I think the Deep Fried Perch with Tamarind Springs Own Spicy Sauce was what we had for the main course. Nyummy!

  • My favourite is Xiao Long Bau. XLB is as small as a ping pong ball where it was wrapped up by a semi transparent skin look-alike pastry. Inside was mixed pork with other condiments which I'm not sure but definitely more than just delicious. The way of eating is to put some black vinegar and sliced gingers and then open your mouth, eat.

Street vendors and hawkers: Teh Tarik
  • Tip Rating:
  • Satisfaction:
  • Let me explain and describe what is Teh-tarik otherwise tourists have no idea what this glass of thing is. Teh means Indian Tea or British Tea, not Chinese Tea. Tarik means pull and drag which is an action using two jugs pulling up down in skillful hand movements many times repeatedly so that the tea and condensed milk blend equally to generate a full glass of bubbles. The Indians believe by pulling such a way can make the tea more tasty and good for digesting. Teh Tarik is as old as the history of Indian peoples the day they settled down here. Therefore if tourists want to taste the most representational drinks of Malaysia, it has to be Teh-Tarik. Teh-Tarik is a hot drink, for those who like cold can ask for Teh-Ais. Teh-Ais is the cold version of Teh-Tarik just like Ice Mocha. The cost of each Teh-Tarik is below US 0.50 cents while Teh-Ais cost a bit more roughly 10 cents more. Malaysian Ringgit is RM1.50 per glass. Malaysian like to have a glass of Teh-Tarik together with breakfast. Tourists are welcome to have a glass of Teh-Tarik with us.

    Dim Sum in Jalan Ipoh

This restaurant is good as supper also as breakfast, not recomended for lunch as the location is hot even open air. At night the location is of another affluent ambience of endless customers to eat until morning. This Dimsum restaurant even have Indian customers. Althogh they eat a lot but they drink Milo-Ais or Coke, to me that was funny as the main point of eating Dimsum is to drink the hot Chinese tea while eating.

Try the chicken legs or (phoenix claws)

Fatman Steamboat: Select, Dip & Enjoy!
  • Tip Rating:
  • Satisfaction:
  • You can find Fatman Steamboat at most nightmarkets around the Klang Valley, but I usually visit them every Sunday from 6.00 - 9.00 pm at the Bangsar "Pasar Malam" or Night Market. It's just a great, cheap and fast way of enjoying a bit of steamboat, esp. when you just want a few sticks of jellyfish or fishball or cuttlefish etc. It costs about RM1.75 for any stick. You pick out the stick of whatever it is you want, dip it into the hot water and wait for it to boil, and then fish it out amongst everyone else's sticks in there, and enjoy! Keep the sticks till the end for them to calculate how much you've eaten.

My personal favourite is the jellyfish - it's chewy, crunchy and has an interesting texture. Others are not similarly enamoured as they consider it bland. Whatever! There's so much other choice here though, from intestines to vegetable stuffed tofu to crab claws and cockles, you'll definitely find something you'd want to try. You have a choice of 3 sauces to dip into once your stuff is cooked - oyster sauce, sambal, and something else.
