 | | | | Tamarind Springs: Fine Dining in a secret hideaway - very romantic! | Tip Rating: Satisfaction: | | | | |
I recommend Tamarind Springs as a restaurant for discerning travellers out there on their honeymoon, or even groups who want to eat Indochinese (Vietnam, Laos/Cambodian) food in beautiful, peaceful surroundings. There's also a bar if you just want to go for drinks. They do pickups from all major hotels in the city. It's in a wonderful hidden part of residential KL, surrounded by forest and a nearby golf course so it's very lush and green. If you go at night the pathway you see in the picture is lit by tealights all the way down the sides, but you don't see all this from the access road outside as the entrance is just a little doorway, the first glance as you enter and turn towards the path is magical! Tamarind Hill, a sister restaurant, is also very nice (you can find it on the website also) and a good alternative if you plan to dine on Monday when this one is closed. Prices are more than average for KL as it's targeted for upmarket clientele but comparable to other restaurants in its class. Bear with the waiters who may be a bit slow if they're busy, but the whole experience is worth it! Awarded 'Best Restaurant' 2003 (Tatler).
Sample menus are available on the website. The waiter's recommendations were all good. Can't remember most of the names but I think the Deep Fried Perch with Tamarind Springs Own Spicy Sauce was what we had for the main course. Nyummy! | | | | Fatman Steamboat: Select, Dip & Enjoy! | Tip Rating: Satisfaction: | | | | |
You can find Fatman Steamboat at most nightmarkets around the Klang Valley, but I usually visit them every Sunday from 6.00 - 9.00 pm at the Bangsar "Pasar Malam" or Night Market. It's just a great, cheap and fast way of enjoying a bit of steamboat, esp. when you just want a few sticks of jellyfish or fishball or cuttlefish etc. It costs about RM1.75 for any stick. You pick out the stick of whatever it is you want, dip it into the hot water and wait for it to boil, and then fish it out amongst everyone else's sticks in there, and enjoy! Keep the sticks till the end for them to calculate how much you've eaten.
My personal favourite is the jellyfish - it's chewy, crunchy and has an interesting texture. Others are not similarly enamoured as they consider it bland. Whatever! There's so much other choice here though, from intestines to vegetable stuffed tofu to crab claws and cockles, you'll definitely find something you'd want to try. You have a choice of 3 sauces to dip into once your stuff is cooked - oyster sauce, sambal, and something else. Just walk along all the night market stalls till you find Fatman Steamboat's truck.
