You should try the local food from the roadside street vendors along the famous Bukit Bintang area near to Chinatown. The local food here is cheap and delicious, and famous dishes include the Hokkien noodles, Bak Kut Teh (pork parts in delicious herbal soup and rice), fried oyster omelette, BBQ seafood etc. Best time to go is at night and have your dinner, followed by shopping at nearby shopping area.

Several hawker stalls nearby Masjid Jamek selling local food [mostly Nasi Lemak] and Indian delicacies. Since I like to try the Indian cuisine and 'rindu' [hahhahaa miss my daily meal as in my home!!!] nasi, I prefer to try Nasi Briyani

Nasi Briyani Kuning with veggie and chrysanthemum tea

Street vendors and hawkers: For those who like it CHILLI!
  • Tip Rating:

  • This fantastic little place is located on Jalan Alor and it is well worth checking it out. From what i could gather it is mainly a seafood type place (as the name would suggest) although it did do other meals like frog (which came as a surprise to me!). I was just casually sitting at the back of the restaurant when the owner approached me and pointed to the front of the store and said 'fog?'. I thought to myself 'well actually, there may be a little smog outside but i don't know about fog' but i just nodded and smiled. Anyway, the lady could see that i might have been having trouble understanding her so she led me to the front of the shop and pointed to a cage on the ground and repeated 'fog?'. I was still confused until i looked down and saw all of these frogs bouncing around inside the cage and gently declined her recommendation. I settled on calamari and fried fish and they were both absolutely delicious...although be warned that if you are a little bit sensitive to food with a bit of chilli on top then you may want to keep your bottle of water handy (a can of cola just did not do the job for me!). The chef here loves his chilli and wants to spread the word. So for me i actually had calamari (with purple chilli that i thought was onion until i took a bite and got a surprise) and fried fish (with something that was very spicy). But all in all the food was very good, the atmosphere simple but warm and the people that owned the store were extremely friendly and polite.

Street vendors and hawkers: YONG TAU FU
  • Tip Rating:
  • 'Yong Tau fu' is used to local peolpe appetite. The most important thing whether you wanted to know the yong tau fu itself could be either nice, delicious or not it depending to the gravy or sauce itself. Look for the very thick and dark sauce before you jump on with picking up all the ingradient such as fish ball, chicken ball, crab, egg, and the vegetable and lots more you can choose. Well, the taste was just gorgeous for me. You could as well look for it at 'Saturday Night Market' at Jalan Tuanku Abdul Rahman near Little India. You could find variety of dishes in different stalls. Beside foods you can find another stuffs and also good bargain for them.

Here u have to pay more for hawker food - but it is housed in a cleaner environment. And there are plenty to choose - you have nasi lemak, the very popular Assam Laksa, and Prawn Mee - Penang Hokkien Mee) and some rice dishes. My favourite besides those I mention are the fruit rojak and the uniqe ice kacang with the sarsi flavour

Street vendors and hawkers: Tau Foo Fah
  • Tip Rating:
  • available from street vendors - one near the Mac Donald along Jalan Bukit Bintang opposite to BB Plaza is excellent. She has the smoothest curd in town . It is really yummy with the sugar syrup. Her stall is in front of a bakery - not sure the name of bakery could be Honey bakery. Another good one is in front of Hongkong bank branch along Jalan Sultan Ismail - opposite to the Ship restaurannt.

Very smooth soybean curd (tau foo fah) - and filling drink (tau cheong suey). Cost not more than 1 ringgit each serve

Street vendors and hawkers: Food stalls
  • Tip Rating:
  • Go and eat in one of the many 'restaurants' where you normally wouldn't think about eating. Can't say it enough, try these places. You'll probably be the only foreigner, but so what? The food is simple, cheap, but good.

Street vendors and hawkers: JALAN ALOR
  • Tip Rating:

  • The Street markets We went here almost every night and were never disappointed. When you travel to a foreign place you must experience the local lifestyle and this was it. Small food stalls lined the street with tables and chairs. All food is cooked fresh and hot. Very cheap! It was for me an experience to sit outside in such a busy lively street at 10.30pm at night with many more people coming.

Street vendors and hawkers: Cheaps eats!
  • Tip Rating:
  • Satisfaction:
  • You should not miss the street food in Malaysia. Why, because it's cheap, fast and delicious. For US$5, you can have a complete meal plus drinks. Choose from rice dishes, noodles, satay, grilled meats and many more. Just watch for the stalls full of locals, you'll be sure of a satifying meal

Too many! I normally go to Subang Jaya, PJ SS2 or SS24 for my street food "supper". In KL, it would have to be Jalan Alor, Peng Hua, Petaling Street or perhaps a little upscale to Desa Sri Hartamas
