Eating houses and hawker stalls in China Town.

The whole China Town takes on a different air when the street is closed at 6 p.m. and Jalan Petaling becomes a pasar malam (an open air night market) where you can get food stalls on the road.

Hawker food is cheap, tasty and fast. Some people have preconceived ideas about its cooking being done in open-air surroundings. But if a stall is located in a clean environment and the food-handler looks clean, you would be safe eating in the stall. Hawker food is usually prepared as you order so freshness is ensured. Hawker stalls present a fantastic selection of stir-fried noodles, soup, fried rice and an endless variety of seafood dishes. They offer a Malaysian gastronomic adventure you should not miss!

Hawker stalls are my favourite. See, this is my breakfast - MEAT BALL NOODLE with ICE BLACK COFFEE - cost me only RM3.50

Street vendors and hawkers: delicious buns for anytime of the day
  • Tip Rating:
  • Satisfaction:
  • A stall located near the old chow yang restaurant, this "makan place" holds very well on its own... waiting time can be a killer, but the food is well worth the time... many restaurant customers nearby always place an order first, as waiting can take up to 15 minutes, as the buns are prepared on the spot.. opening time is very limited though, open for breakfast about 8-10 i think, and dinner, about 8 till the vendor is satisfied...

the bun with the red paste or as locals would call it, "Ham Chim Peng", but there are other choices too, such as the long, lightly fried bun known as the la cha kwai, commonly eaten with congee/porridge. other choices include bun with rice fillings, and bun with no fillings... prices are 60 cents which is equivalent to about 30 us cents.

Street vendors and hawkers: Upmarket Hawker
  • Tip Rating:
  • Satisfaction:
  • Firstly, this place is located in an upmarket neighbourhood in the western part of the city. The food here is excellent but the price is rather unreasonable for a hawker stall. However, we're paying for the quality of the food and not the place. Plus, it's in an upmarket area but I still thik that the owner, Azim should lower the price. Everything is excellent here. No doubt about it. The cook is the owner itself and he's an engineer and turned a trained Swiss cook who used to work in Mandarin Oriental Hotel in Kuala Lumpur.

You should definitely go for the Chicken Chop with mushroom sauce and everything else.

Street vendors and hawkers: Nasi Lemak for Breakfast
  • Tip Rating:
  • Satisfaction:
  • Dare to have hot and spicy rice for breakfast? Well, this is a typical a Malay for breakfast meal selling at many many stalls or street vendors you can find withing Klang Valley.

Nasi Lemak is consist of Coconut rice served with condiments such Sambal anchovies, peanuts, omellette or boiled egg and fresh slice cucumber. Sometimes if you wish, Chicken rendang maybe served together. Best have it with Teh Tarik (sort of shake tea with milk) To me, is a must have breakfast if you ever in Malaysia

Jalan Alor comes alive in the evening and night time with brightly lit hawker stalls, makeshift table and chairs and a steady stream of food lovers and supper diners. Here, visitors can sample a range of much-beloved local fare, from satay to barbecued seafood to fried noodles to icy desserts.

Some favourites include barbecued sting ray and fried Hokkien noodles.

Street vendors and hawkers: Great Thosai
  • Tip Rating:
  • Satisfaction:
  • Great restaurant with even greater food. The prices are like those in hawker stalls but you get an indoor environment with fans.

The best dishes would have to be thosai and roti canai, never tasted a better thosai anywhere else, and I've tasted a lot of them!

Generally, the street vendors can set up their stalls on places permitted by the City Council. In Ramadhan month (Fasting months for Muslim countries...) the City Council would allocate more places for young wannabees business entrepreneurs to set up their stalls, selling foods & drinks to 'break the fasting'; or rather known as 'the times when you can eat' ! They have to apply for the permits & it's limited; it's a matter who comes first, can get the permits first... Breaking The Fast : This would be around 7 pm or so, hence people coming back from work at 5 or 6 pm can buy their 'takeaways', ready to be drunk & eaten once they reach home.... The photo shows an area near Puduraya Bus Station although inside Puduraya itself has its own vendors seeling foods & drinks to 'break the fast'...as you can see from my photo below...
