Street vendors and hawkers: Refreshing Drink
  • Satisfaction:
  • This stalls only sell drinks and a lot of people buy from them. You got to really line up for it.

The drink is call 'Air Mata Kuching' literally means 'Cat's Eye Water'. it is actually a longan and buddha fruit drink. I'm not sure how it is made but it a refreshing drink especially for a person who is 'heaty'. Heaty means a person take too much of deep fried food eventualy will end up sick. So drinking the drink will cool you body down. That is what my elders told me.

Street vendors and hawkers: Refreshing in a cup!
  • Satisfaction:
  • This is a MUST stop. Tucked in the middle of Petaling Street, Chinatown is this hive of an activity.

Watch people stroll up, pay MYR1, grab a cup of cold brownish liquid, slurp it all up in gusto, slapped on a face of immense satisfaction and then be on their merry way.

So what is this mysterious elixir of life?

Loosely translated, "Air Mata Kuching" means "Cat's eyes drink"....though before you turn blue at the idea of drinking actual cat's eyes floating in a liquid, the drink is actually a sweet herbal infusion of dried longan (which looks like cat's eyes), momordaceae fruit (aka "Luo Han Guo") and winter melon pieces, served refreshingly cold. This infusion has been claimed to cool the body from "excess heat" and is good on a hot humid day or after a heavy meal of fried stuff.

The Air Mata Kuching....ah but then?

Street vendors and hawkers: Beef Noodles
  • Satisfaction:
  • Another stall tucked away along the streets off Jalan Alor, amidst the traffic, chaos, dirt and grime.

But somehow this is where you'll find the soul food of a big city.

Set against a backdrop of lime green walls, flimsy plastic chairs and seedy flickering fluorescent ceiling light, steaming hot minced beef noodles, served up with a hot tasty soup of beef innards and spare parts are offered to the most adventurous of travellers. Try the fiery chilli to go along with the noodles and you'll lit the fire within to explore this city more.

The Beef Noodle. The chilli. What's there to not like? Small serving but BIG on taste!

Street vendors and hawkers: Charcoal Wok Stir-Fry!
  • Satisfaction:
  • As local as you can probably get to. This is a street stall tucked away in one grimey, chaotic and dirty alley but no mistake please - this is where you get the real taste of the land....once you get pass the 3rd world condition in the alley.

The rows of locals slurping down their chow without batting an eyelid at a shell-shock you is a dead giveaway sign of "Good Food: Found Here!". Just think: You can go home and tell stories of how brave you are, surviving a great meal amidst dirt, grime, dust and maybe the occasional creepy crawlies.

My colleague swears by his Fried Hokkien Mee.
I took a fancy to the Fried Mee Sua instead.

Wok stir-dried over a hearty charcoal fire and loaded with pork lard pieces (yes, sinfully unhealthy; but yet so sinfully delicious! You can hear your arteries groan.....), everything serves up smelling heavenly.

Throw in pieces of pork, pig innards like liver, shrimps and vegetables and you get the taste of KL serve up on plates.

(PS: The hung up menu not only comes in Chinese and English, but surprisingly Japanese as well!)

Street vendors and hawkers: Roti Canai also for Breakfast
  • Satisfaction:
  • Roti canai (known most of westerner as pan cakes) is one of the most popular dish served for breakfast in Malaysia. It's also a must have and plenty of street vendors especially the mamak make a good roti canai.

Roti canai generally eaten plain with fish or chicken curry. But some locals like me preferred Roti canai filled with slices banana (called Roti Pisang). Try this you know what I meant.

If you are ever in Chinatown, don't miss the chance to try this famous 'Air Mata Kucing' (Longan + LohHanKo Drink). This is the best Longan drink that I have ever had. The ingredients are: dried longan, Loh Han Go, winter melon, rock sugar. It is so good especially on a hot day.

    RM1.2 - Small
    RM1.5 - Large
    RM1.5 - without ice

By the way, they also opened a branch on Lower Level of Mid Valley Megamall.

Street vendors and hawkers: Aint this the best for a street dinner?
  • Satisfaction:
  • The pictures shows the food we ate along J. Alor street. I forgot the name of the restaurant but i remember it spelled something like Soo Woo or Soo Woi.. something like that.. the food was great! as u can see... but we paid for something we didnt expect. Those 4 dishes cost us 56 ringgit... i thought it would be cheaper to eat at a hawker stall but maybe we just didnt know how and where exactly to order since there were lot of stalls there... and one more thing, we didnt know that small orders are these much! We ended up giving all the extra food (since we were only 2) to the taxi driver.

i like the garlic shrimp, its a bit crunchy.. the chicken was a bit spicy and the vegetables and beef was just fine.

It is an experience you must try...
