  • Getting ready for the jump - Kuala Lumpur
    Getting ready for the jump

I did this with a friend who wanted to celebrate turning the big 3-0 with a bang. It was a `bang' alright - my intentions to do this on a regular basis however has yet to be fufilled as it is quite a pricey hobby to maintain here in Malaysia - a singular jump can cost up to RM500!

Will be provided by the diving school but do wear something sturdy on the jump day itself.

Running & Jogging: Hashing with the Hares

If you have never heard of hashing, this is the time to learn about it. And if you're in the know, this is where it all started. Hashing was created shortly before World War II by some British expat men who were residing in Kuala Lumpur and grew out of a British schoolboy's racing game called "hounds and hares" (or whatever) that involved following a paper trail. They named their group the "Hash House Harriers" in recognition of the place they lived and ate, affectionately called the Hash House. The popularity (and irreverence) of the sport are such that it has spread globally. There are about 1500 Hash Chapters worldwide. Hashing is sometimes said to be practiced by drinkers with a running problem. It involves running (or walking) through the jungles and wetlands by following a marked trail. It also involves a "beer check" at the turnaround point. On return to the point of departure, everyone slakes their prodigious thirsts with.... more beer, and then they settle down to a meal at a local eatery. Hash groups are always ready to welcome newcomers and visitors. Just contact an organizer to get details.

Just whatever seems appropriate for running in sticky heat and humidity.

    Bukit Tabur @ Melawati Hills
  • Tip Rating:
  • Melawati Hills (Bukit Tabur is the actual name but I still prefer to call it Melawati Hills because everytime I mention Bukit Tabur, peoples seem confused). Take LRT to Wangsa Maju station then jump on a taxi, tell your taxi driver you want to visit Taman Melawati's hill. Only 10 minutes drive from Wangsa Maju, so don't pay more than 15 Ringgits. If you like nature, looking at monkeys, forest, breath some fresh air, this is the place for you in Kuala Lumpur. This is also a place still not much polluted, but please don't bring unwanted stuff to pollute my favourite hill. When you come to KL, try to visit this Melawati Hills located at Taman Melawati. You need to go in early morning and just a 2 hours climb up the top to enjoy looking at the whole KL also able to snap early sunrise photos. One thing unexpected here is the lake, you can see the lake after you ascended up to certain height where you can enjoy beautiful tropicanas and hill plants, species of birds and it is also a favourite natural habitat of the silver-leaf monkeys too. But don't try to swim in the lake because of big toman fish, they bite you real hard. The lake is actually a dam but surprisingly beautiful, so I called it lake rather than dam.

Running & Jogging: Round and Round the garden !
  • Tip Rating:
  • Right in the centre of KLCC, there is gently undulating jogging track around the park in front of the Petronas towers. It was pretty deserted by about 11AM, but I've no doubt it fills up with eager types in the cooler parts of the day.

Canopy Walk in FRIM (Forrest Research Institute of Malaysia). Located in the Kepong area of KL, it's about 20 mins drive from the city. To do the canopy walk, one needs to pay a fee of RM 5.00 at the FRIM office. After that, you'll need to hike up a 1 km path and it's uphill all the way. Wow, did I nearly bust me legs on this trip, but it paid off big time! Never tried one? Well, you should! 100 feet above the ground walking on the ropes... amazing :)

Jungle wear! hehe kidding, just the usual outdoor attire is sufficient.

Bungy Jumping: Children - don't do this at home.
  • Tip Rating:
  • Found a superb site for bungy jumping : The skybridge of the Petronas towers, some 41 stories up. As an alternative, you could try base jumping off the top. I know that it has been done because I saw it on a video playing on the MRT in Singapore !

Get all your friends who have boring desk jobs to save up all those little elastic bands and tie them together to make a bungy cord.
