Mountain Biking, Kuala Lumpur
Just in case you need to buy a bicycle, this tip might help. This is probably the biggest bicycle shop in Malaysia and Kuala Lumpur, the owner is an Asian Champion (if not mistaken) himself, most of the bikes in the shops are very expensive, selling road bikes and mountain bikes. The price of a bicycle here sometimes can be RM10000 each. The location is very complicated, at opposite of Ampang Point shopping mall, not exactly opposite, you need to get across the traffic light and walk about 200 meters to a roll of shops beside the flyover.
There is a weath of Mountain Biking to be done in and around KL, some of the best for visitors being around the reservoires behind the Batu caves. The terain varies between well used single track to some seriously hairy trecking through the jungle or steep and rocky, unforgiving downhills. Mozzi repelant is an absolute must on most rides as is a basic first aid kit. Maps tend to be a bit sketchy in Malaysia and you will probably end up working off a scrap of paper provided by a local. If however you want some tips or routes please feel free to mail me along with your ability and prefered ride length and i'll see what i can do for you.
Equipment: Bring your own! there are some small shops selling run of the mill equipment - mostly shimano of course! If you need anything even vaguelly exotic bring it from home. If you get chance the one great place that I did find was in Singapore, called 'cannasia'. They specialise in Cannondale but also carry a great supply of nice bits both equipment and clothes. Being a Triathelete and an Ironman, the manager is also a usefull guy to know!
