Batu Caves: Batu Caves
  • Tip Rating:
  • Batu Caves is a famous tourist destination especially during Thaipusam festival. This event attracts many devotees and spectators who come to watch devotees in a trance carrying kavadi, a metal frame attached to the body. There are also milk kavadi. Oh and you have to climb steep flight of 272 steps to reach the top. I took the taxi from Petronas tower to Batu Caves and it cost us RM12.00 but the return journey from Batu Caves to Hard Rock Cafe was around RM16.00. Make sure the taxi drivers use meters.

Petronas Twin Towers: Tallest Twin Tower
  • Tip Rating:
  • The 88-storey Petronas Twin Towers was designed by Cesar Pelli and Associates is the Petronas Corporate Headquarters was completed in 1997. The towers are joined at the 41st and 42nd floors (175m above street level) by a 192 ft-long (58.4 m) double-decker Sky Bridge. The 1,483 ft (451.9 m), was one of the world's tallest buildings in the world. The sky bridge tour is nice as you can see some of the buildings from there but the best view of KL can be view from KL Tower. The 10 minutes tour takes you to the bridge and sees the view from the top. Remember to get there early morning and line up for the pass for the bridge tour. I once waited from 7:30am to get the pass for some friends and we got our pass for 9am tour. Even if you are in line at 9am it also depends on the amount of tourist in-front of you sometime your tour can be for the afternoon. The tour is free so get there early to get your pass. The Sky Bridge is opened from 9:00am to 5:00pm from Tuesdays to Sunday and closed on Monday unless its a Public holiday.

    National History Museum
  • Tip Rating:
  • The National History Museum is housed in this historical building which was formerly occupied by the Standard Chartered Bank during the colonial days. The museum exhibits important collections of Malaysian history under one roof. Among the important items exhibited here are a table used for the signing of the 1874 Pangkor Treaty that leads to the British interference in the administration of the Malay states and also the First Federation of Malaya flag which was raised after the Union Jack flag was lowered in signaling the independence of the Malay states on the night of August 31, 1957. Besides having impressive collections, the architecture of this museum also displays unique features based on its Moorish architecture circa 1800s. Located right in the heart of Kuala Lumpur and surrounded by many monuments and historical buildings make it all the more accessible and nostalgic to visit.

Sri Mahamariamman Indian Temple: Sri Mahamariaman Hindu Temple
  • Tip Rating:
  • Being the most elaborates Hindu temple in the country, the Sri Mahamariaman temple was built with such an intriguing design - its shape resembles a human body lying on its back with the head facing west and the feet pointing east. The tallest structure in the temple is the "gopuram" (tower) that is corresponding to the feet of the human body, and is the threshold between the material and spiritual world. The dramatic 23m-high pyramid-shaped gate tower is decorated with depictions of Hindu gods sculptured by artisans from southern India. It is nicely decorated with features such as intricate carvings of Hindu deities, gold embellishments, precious stones and hand-painted motifs depicting stories from early Hinduism. Italian and Spanish tiles cover the walls of its interior. The temple also houses the tallest Hindu silver chariot in Malaysia that is kept in a vault. It is brought out once a year during the Thaipusam celebration for the procession from the temple to Batu Caves. Located along Jalan Tun HS Lee of the Chinatown area, the temple is a fine evidence of religous freedom and racial tolerance that has long been in existence in Malaysia. Visitors to the temple may have a chance to witness the prayer rituals ("pooja") or a fascinating traditional Hindu wedding.

Directly opposite the old KL Railway station is the Malayan Railway ("Keretapi Tanah Melayu" or KTMB) Administration building. The building's Moorish design readily complements the old KL Railway station and both buildings are linked by an underground thoroughfare. This "Old Monument and Historical Site" gazetted building was also designed by British architect A.B. Hubbock in 1913. However, its construction was delayed by the World War 1and was only completed in 1917. The building is a unique blend of various architectures, and has elements from the 13th and 14th century Ottoman and Mogul empires as well as Gothic and ancient Greek designs. Its high and wide verandahs is well adapted to the tropical climate. The rhythmic arched colonades wrapping the verandahs give the building on its facade an interesting shadow interplay. There are five domes sit majestically atop the building, each surrounded by four spiral columns of orthodox Greek design. This historical building was partly damaged during World War 2 due to bombing and by a fire in 1968 but has then been restored to its original conditions. Plan is underway to turn the building into an exclusive heritage hotel upon the completion of the new KTMB headquarters building in the future.

    Royal Selangor Club: Selangor Club
  • Tip Rating:
  • One of the earliest club for KL's elite, the Selangor Club has been around since the British colonial days as the social gathering place for the Britons stationed in KL. It is located just opposite the Sultan Abdul Samad building and Dataran Merdeka (which used to be called Selangor Club's field). Its unique feature is its Tudor inspired design which is a striking contrast to building with domes and minarets in its surrounding.

    Chinatown: Petaling Street
  • Tip Rating:
  • A must for any tourist. PETALING STREET - The heart of Kuala Lumpur's original CHINATOWN and a bustling night market serving as a bargain hunter's paradise and one of the premier shopping areas in the city with its distinctly oriental atmosphere. Petaling Street maintains much of its traditional atmosphere, particularly at night when vendors spread their wares out on the street. While it is possible to purchase anything from gems and incense to toys and t-shirts here, enjoying the night market is really a matter of just wandering about and enjoying its sights, sounds, and energy. Incredible bargains amidst a melange of signs, shops, noise and roadside food stalls open until the wee hours of the morning. My Visit: We were at Petaling street for a night market at around 7pm and surprisingly for me, the sun is still up. We were able to buy lots of Malaysian delicacies to take back home, and some souvenir items as well. I suggest you master the "art of haggling" when visiting to Chinatown since a lot of vendors tend to double even triple their price so beware. Be cautious with your belongings too since the street tends to get crowded and snatchers might just be around.

Prior to the building of the Petronas Twin Towers, the Sultan Abdul Samad building has long been a famous landmark for Malaysia and Kuala Lumpur. Designed by British architect A.C Norman, it was built in 1897 with a unique Moorish-style design. The Moorish inspired design of the building is based on some of the features of buildings in Islamic countries that suitably reflects the cultural background of Malaysia. It used to be the Colonial Secretariat offices, but now houses the Supreme and High Courts. The centre of attraction is it's clock tower in the midle - KL's answer to London's 'Big Ben'. The clock tower is significant to many major events; from the lowering of the Union Jack at the strock of midnite when Malaysia (then Malaya) gained independance to the numorous new year eve celebrations. Another must visit in KL.

National Museum: Muzium Negara (National Museum)
  • Tip Rating:
  • The site of the Muzium Negara - on a hill facing Jalan Travers - was originally the site for the old Selangor Museum which was opened in 1906 and later accidentally destroyed by the Allied forces during the World War 2. In 1952, a small new building was erected at the same site to display national treasures and was officially opened by the British Resident then, Sir Gerald Templer. Upon independence, the small building was demolished in 1959 to make way for the present museum which was officially opened in August 1963. The Museum Negara was built in the style of a Malay palace. It consist of a large central main entrance hall that is flanked by two exhibition wings. The two large murals on the exterior of the exhibition wings depicts scenes of the country - the mural on the rights depicts the culture and customs of Malaysian while the one on the left chronicals the historical episodes of the nations. The museum was later extended in the 1990s to include a library, an auditorium and an additional exhibition hall for thematic exhibitions. The museum houses various galleries with different themes - Historical Gallery, Cultural Gallery, Metalworks and Musical Instrument Gallery, National Sports Gallery and the National History Gallery. Apart from the permanent exhibits, the musueum also holds regular thematic exhibitions, most noteably its Treasures from the Graves, Enduring Beauty and World of Ghosts exhibits that drawn large crowd of curious visitors. Visiting hours are from 9am to 6pm daily with RM1.00 entrance fee.
