National Mosque: Masjid Negara (National Mosque)
  • Tip Rating:
  • The National Mosque is located just across the street from the old KL Railway Station. The location was chosen by the country first Prime Minister, Tunku Abdul Rahman Putra Al-Haj; as he want it to be easily accesible by those people from outstation who come to KL by train. (It is common for Muslims travellers to drop by at the nearest mosque to cleanse up and perform their prayers before continuing their journey. If it is late in the evening, mosque is also often use a place for them to stay overnite).

Completed in 1965 at a cost of RM10million, the building consist of a prayer hall, multi purpose hall, the warrior mausoleum, a library, offices, open courtyard and the minaret.

The prayer hall is sheltered by a folded-plate roof in the shape of "semi-opened umbrella" with 18 pleats radiating from the centre. Its minaret is in the shape of "closed umbrella" stands at 72 metres from the ground. This umbrella design gives the mosque a unique contrast to other onion shape domes and minaret in the buildings within its vicinity.

National Museum: Muzium Negara (National Museum)
  • Tip Rating:
  • The site of the Muzium Negara - on a hill facing Jalan Travers - was originally the site for the old Selangor Museum which was opened in 1906 and later accidentally destroyed by the Allied forces during the World War 2. In 1952, a small new building was erected at the same site to display national treasures and was officially opened by the British Resident then, Sir Gerald Templer. Upon independence, the small building was demolished in 1959 to make way for the present museum which was officially opened in August 1963.

The Museum Negara was built in the style of a Malay palace. It consist of a large central main entrance hall that is flanked by two exhibition wings. The two large murals on the exterior of the exhibition wings depicts scenes of the country - the mural on the rights depicts the culture and customs of Malaysian while the one on the left chronicals the historical episodes of the nations. The museum was later extended in the 1990s to include a library, an auditorium and an additional exhibition hall for thematic exhibitions.

The museum houses various galleries with different themes - Historical Gallery, Cultural Gallery, Metalworks and Musical Instrument Gallery, National Sports Gallery and the National History Gallery. Apart from the permanent exhibits, the musueum also holds regular thematic exhibitions, most noteably its Treasures from the Graves, Enduring Beauty and World of Ghosts exhibits that drawn large crowd of curious visitors.

Visiting hours are from 9am to 6pm daily with RM1.00 entrance fee.

    Merdeka Square: Dataran Merdeka
  • Tip Rating:
  • Just opposite the Sultan Abdul Samad building, Dataran Merdeka (Independance Square) was formerly known as the Selangor Club field before being upgraded and renamed to its present status.

The new name better reflects its status as it was at this place on midnight of August 31, 1957 that the Malayan flag was hoisted for the first time in the country's history upon gaining independence from the British rule.

As a rememberance to this event, a 100 metre high flagpole - the world tallest - was erected at the very place where the Malayan flag was hoisted on the independance day. On August 31 every year the Merdeka Day Parade will normally be held here. Apart from the parade, Dataran Merdeka is also the popular venue for various other events - open air concerts, carnivals, starting/finishing point for marathons etc. Occasionally it will be turned into batle ground for kriket match, just like it used to be during the colonial days.

Underneath the flagpole area used to house Plaza Putra - an underground food, leisure, entertainment complex and an underground parking bay. Unfortunately it was flooded after a very heavy downpour recently and still close to the public.

At the other end of the field is a nice fountain area for relaxation. Exactly facing the Sultan Abdul Samad building is the Selangor Club building - an inheritance of the colonial days that is still in operation till these days.

    Architecture: Enjoy Architecture
  • Tip Rating:
  • Moorish architecture, that's what they call this famous looking train station of Kuala Lumpur.

Perhaps the only attractive thing about the train station is the look, as the trains themselves are a great disapointment - old dilapidated, frequent delays, slow-moving and of course NOISY.

Don't look into the toilets yet ! They were horrible the last time I took the train ( 30 years ? ) but maybe now they're better -- keep me informed if you can.

Menara Telecommunications Tower: Menara Kuala Lumpur (KL Tower)
  • Tip Rating:
  • Menara Kuala Lumpur is the fourth tallest tower in the world after the CN Tower (Toronto), Ostankino Tower (Moscow) and Oriental Pearl Tower (Shanghai). It was build on top of Bukit Nenas; a small hill amidst a forest reserve within the golden triangle area of KL.

The tower stands at 94 meters above sea- level and is 421 meters high. A welcoming sight for visitors to the tower is its beautifully landscaped pedestarian mall; complete with cascading pools and fountains along the walkaway.

On the ground floor is a theatrette (showing a short documentary on the tower), an amphitheatre, a prayer room, ticketing counters and shoplots (for fast food outlet and souvenir shops).

An interesting feature of the tower is its decoration in the form of Muqarnas - a traditional Islamic form of arts. Craftmen from KL's twin city - Isfahan of Iran - was specially brought in for this purpose.

Reaching the tower head is a 2,058 steps of stairway but fret not as the tower is also equiped with 4 express lifts that will carry the visitors up to the observation deck within 60 seconds. The stairway form part of the route for the annual KL Tower Run sporting event.

The tower head has 8 floors that include an observation platform, a revolving restaurant (Seri Angkasa), a telecommunication station, a building service floor, a brodcast station and a meteorological station.

Visitors can enjoy a panoramic view of the city from its observation deck as well as the revolving restaurant. Hence, a visit to the tower is a must for a bird eye view of KL and its surrounding area.

    Admission:
    Malaysian - RM8 (Adults) & RM3 (Child)
    Foreigners - RM15 (Adults) & RM9 (Child)

    Menara Telecommunications Tower: KL Tower
  • Tip Rating:
  • Menara KL located at Bukit Nanas is 421 meters is the 4th tallest telecommunication tower in the world. On a clear day you can see as far a Genting Highlands.

The glass shape diamonds arranged according to the form of the traditional Islamic 'Muqarnas' can be seen at the lobby entrance and lift lobby area. This is really beautiful.

This tower was completed in 1996. I have the opportunity to see it while it was being built and it was wonderful. We took the lift to the restaurant and then the stair to the observations area and outside to the telecommunication antenna area.

But now only the Observations deck and revolving restaurant are open for public.

    Open daily from 10am-10pm

    Admission fee: RM8 (Adults) / RM3 (Children 4-12years)

The KLCC Park was desigend by the late Roberto Burle Marx, the famous Brazilian master of gardens. It fact, the park is his last inspired masterpiece.

The park is spread over 50-acres (20-hectares) of lush tropical garden that provides tranquility for those who want to escape from the stress of city life.

Among the interesting element of the park is its elevated bridge that is centrally located tp provides visitors with a vantage view of the park and the majestic Petronas Twin Towers in the background. Within the park, there is also a 1.3km jogging track, rest areas, ornamental water features and children playground.

    Suria KLCC: Major Firework Celebrations
  • Tip Rating:
  • new year's eve fireworks display - Kuala Lumpur
    new year's eve fireworks
    display

Every New Year's Eve (save for exceptional circumstances like this year's tsunami disaster), and also on our Merdeka Day (i.e. Malaysia's National Day on 31st August) they'll put on some rocking fireworks displays in the KLCC Park by the PETRONAS Twin Towers. Around midnight, after the usual countdown, the sound of the fireworks reverberate off the surrounding buildings and make it really loud and festive. There will usually also be concerts and parachuters or base jumpers jumping off from the upper levels of the Twin Towers. Great stuff!

But be warned of course, the traffic jams around the main roads leading up to KLCC during such events are pretty bad. Hundreds of cars also take the opportunity to park 5 or 6 rows strong along the nearby Ampang Elevated Highway and wherever else there is a good view.

Oh, actually the fireworks happen in 3 major locations - at KLCC, at the Bintang Walk, and at the Merdeka Square. But of course, the KLCC ones are the best (more photos in my travelogue)!

Masjid Jamek KL - Where KL Started
  • Tip Rating:
  • Built in 1907 and officially opened by the Sultan of Selangor on Dec 23, 1909, Masjid Jamek Kuala Lumpur is the oldest mosque in KL. It is not surprising then that the mosque is situated at the very place where KL started - where the two rivers (Sg Gombak and Sg Kelang) meet.

This striking red-brick and marble building is inspired by the mogul/north Indian Islamic architecture as it was designed by British engineer A.B. Hubback, who had previously served in India. It has three domes - the bigest dome at the centre was collapsed in the 1990s and later rebuilt. At the corners are two red and white striped minarets.

As it is located in the city centre, muslims flock the mosque daily for their prayers. On Friday the crowd will be over flooded up to the street and the LRT Station nearby (no wonder they name it Masjid Jamek station :)

A must visit for all who come to KL as it is located at the site where the history of KL started.
