Batu Caves: Steep climb up to the Batu Caves
Visitors to the Batu Caves will first have to climb up 272 steps to reach the caves. After all that hard work, they may be disappointed to find ... just a large cave. The caves are actually a religious site for Hindu worshippers, and visitors will find prayer altars and statues or images of Hindu gods around the cave. There is also a temple at the foot of the cave. The caves become the site of a colourful religious procession during the annual Thaipusam, which is "a day for penance and atonement". As part of the procession, Hindu devotees will carry kavadis (wooden steel yokes with longspikes and metal hooks) pierced into their bodies, as well as perform fire walking, where they walk across hot coals barefooted.

We visited a day before the Deepvali festival, many visitors that day. For us, an interesting colection of temples occupied our (limited) time, we didn't make it up the steps and into the caves. Never mind we enjoyed our visit, also found an excellent cafe for a quick lunch.

When we were there the place was under renovation with many things covered up. I am sure it will be really wonderful once everything is completed. It is worth a visit if only to see the antics of the many monkeys that hang around the cave.

    Batu Caves: Thaipusam fiesta
You should only go during the Hindhu Thaipusam festival in January to see all the gory and piercings carried out by pious devotees. Be respectful though as we Malaysians are toward each other. A similar event takes place in my hometown of Penang as well. Otherwise, you may like to explore the limestone caves with a guide. There are some other limestone caving adventures elsewhere; Gua Tempurung in Perak and Gua Kelam in Perlis being examples.

i saw these caves whilst on a tour group but i was given enough time to climb the stairs to the top...there are loooads, but again its worth it, if you like culture. i wouldnt bother going to the so-called 'museum' though, its interesting if you can speak hindi, and this is also where i had my encounter with the snake and the monkeys scared the life out of me...otherwise this place wasnt bad
