Kuala Lumpur's Chinatown is not as colourful as in other more traditional Malaysian cities, such as Malacca or Penang, but well worth a visit to have lunch or do some shopping. It is one of the most active parts of town and one can still find here traditional stores and food stalls in contrast with the standardised boutiques and fast food venues of the shopping malls.

Bargain? Yeah! Chinatown as it known, where you might heard often and it is the most common places that visited by travellers! Many travellers come to Chinatown because of the bargain business!
Lots of goodies, anything from watches to handbags but believe me, all those are not original and not long lasting but it's damn cheap thats all.

Just go for a wander around the narrow streets and market stalls in Chinatown.

There is plenty to see and buy and of course all those wonderful aromas to smell.

Spreading out from Central Market is Chinatown, KL's commercial kernel dating from the arrival of the first traders in the 1860s. Bordered by Jalan Petaling to the east and Jalan Tun Perak to the north, the area had adopted its current borders by the late-nineteenth century, with southern-Chinese shophouses, coffee shops and temples springing up along narrow streets such as Jalan Tun H.S. Lee and Jalan Sultan. Little has changed: there are still traditional apothecaries displaying medicines on the street corners, though other shops are as likely to stock computers and sound systems as tools and pots and pans, and what remains of the early architecture is dwarfed by the surrounding skyscrapers. For the moment, family businesses still predominate, but the few remaining genuinely old sites, like the wet market between Jalan Petaling and Jalan Tun H.S. Lee, may well soon be cleared for development. In the meantime, a stroll down Chinatown's narrow lanes still reveals dilapidated shops and Chinese pharmacies, and large baskets of cured and dried meats alternate with the street-vendors' ranks of brightly coloured sweet drinks, soya milk and cigarette lighters.
In the early years of this century, Jalan Petaling was home to brothels and gambling dens. Nowadays, dozens of colourful umbrellas shield the street vendors from the fierce sun, and tourists spend their time bartering for mock Gucci watches, bric-a-brac and clothes. At numbers 86, 90 and 96 you can buy beads, stones, necklaces, masks, sculptures and conches. After 6pm the street is closed to vehicles and the entire area is transformed into a pasar malam (night market), where food stalls offer loong kee (rectangular slices of pork) and deep-fried bananas and expert hagglers can pick up bags, sunglasses, clothes and crafts at bargain prices.

KL's Chinatown is a fun place to walk around--lots of shops, temples, and restaurants. This is also the location of the night market, which is a good place to pick up anything for less than a dollar. We bought some flip-flop sandals that came in handy during our trip to the beach.

  • I have sepnd four months in Kuala Lumpur. I have experienced many taxi drivers will charge you 5 to 6 times more than actual rent if you are not a local person. Please do not carry valuables, more cash, your passport or other travel documents as Kuala Lumpur and other parts of Malaysia are full of thieves.. In case if you come across police do not ask me what sort of real bad guys they are .

Chinatown: Shop around and bargain hard!

  • I love shopping in Chinatown but you have to get a general idea of what a good price is. You can do this by watching other people bargain. I find for T shirts & polo shirts that prices around RM20 is about right and cheaper if you buy 2 or more. DVDs are around RM10. If they refuse to discount the price then walking away can quickly induce a price reduction. Its best to go to Chinatown after 6pm. This is when they close the street and when more shops open up.

  • If you're looking for budget accomodation and don't mind the fact that some hotels also rent out their rooms by the hour, give this area a try - it's close to bus stops(including Puduraya) and the monorail station.
