Churches, Temples & Mosques: Sin Sze Sin-Ya Temple
  • Tip Rating:
  • This is the oldest temple in Kuala Lumpur and was founded by Yap Ah Loy, Kuala Lumpur's third Kapitan China... Endowed with elaborately carved pillars, beams, altars and decrorative items as well as paintings and photographs, the temple is a treasure trove of antiques and artworks that reflect the local Chinese's unique culture... It houses the sculptures of patron deities Sinn Sze-Ya and Si Sze-Ya as well as other deities including the Goddess of Mercy (Guan Yin), the Deity of Education Man Cheong, the White Tiger Pak Foo, Thai Soi, Choi Sun and Choi Pak Seng Kuan...Some spaces on the altars are dedicated to Kapitan Yap Ah Loy... A must visit for those interested in Chinese architectural style...

Churches, Temples & Mosques: Hindu Valluvar Kottam (Art Gallery)
  • Tip Rating:
  • Down the Batu Cave there is a big hindu art gallery in down caves. Valluvar was a poet saint who lived some two thousand years ago. He was bom in Mayilaapur in Tamilnadu State, India. Valluvar was a pious man with a strict sense of duty. He served the King, his family and society faithfully and honestly. He had a keen intellect and a fluent mastery of the Tamil language. Although he was a Householder, he was a sagely and learned person filled with sincere devotion to God. His poems are maxims and homilies to guide his fellow human beings in the proper conduct of their lives. The poems, 1,330 pithy couplets, are filled with sagely wisdom meaningfully consistent with all times. Overseas Tamil Indians have designated the Tirukkural as their "holy scripture" equivalent to holy books of other religions. The cave walls of the Valluvar Kottam are covered with statuary exhibits, murals and inscriptions of the poet's couplets. Unfortunately, the inscriptions are in Tamil without any translations or explanations to help the non-Tamil speaking visitor. The exhibits are used to illustrate relevant couplets from the Tirukkural, his entire works. Valluvar Kottam is so lit that the atmosphere of a silent cave is well preserved. Donation R.M 1:00

Located on top of Robson Hill, off Jalan Syed Putra, the Thean Hou Temple is one of the largest Chinese temple in South East Asia...Opened in 1989, the temple was built with decorative beams, spectacular roofs, domed ceiling, calligraphic couplets, murals and elaborate embellishments reflecting the beauty of Chinese architecture... The temple has 4 levels with the main temple shrine located on the third floor... Inside the temple, the Thean Hou Goddess sits majestically between the Goddess of the Waterfront (or Swei Mei Goddess) and the Goddess of Mercy, know in Chinese as Kuan Yin... Outside on the right of the main temple is the Kuan Yin fountain where devotees and visitors can drink the water from the sprout held by Kuan Yin for blessings...

Churches, Temples & Mosques: Thean How Temple~
  • Tip Rating:
  • These temple is the biggest one around KL. There are only few of us visitors and I almost feel again to the stairs as I wasn't paying attention to where I was going..though the place is quite beautiful and far from the temple you can see the city across. I guess, it's pretty nice if you'll go there around the evening or maybe it's not allowed. The temple itself has its own souvenir shop. You can check them out in the bottom of the building.

Churches, Temples & Mosques: Masjid Jamek
  • Tip Rating:
  • This Moorish mosque rests on the confluence of the Klang and Gombak Rivers, the birth-place of Kuala Lumpur. This is the very spot where the first settlers of Kuala Lumpur built their shacks. The mosque, which dates from 1908, is the oldest in the city. It was designed by Arthur Benison Hubbock, an architectural assistant in the Public Works and Survey Department, who was intrigued and inspired by the Mogul architecture of India. I was trying to get a beautiful photo but it suddenly rain though when we're in the car the rain stopped..Grrr..It's one of the pretty mosque around the colonial district of the city.

It is possible to visit the various mosques around the city. The easiest and most frequently visited in central KL are the Masjid Jamek near Central Market, and the National Mosque near the old railway station. Visiting hours are posted on the main gate. Friday is prayer day, so plan your visit for a different day of the week. If you show up in shorts, a tank top, or a skirt showing your legs, you will be loaned a garment to cover yourself. In addition, women are required to cover their hair. Shoes must be removed before entering the sanctuary. Many of the mosques in KL are architectural masterpieces, so don't miss the opportunity to visit if you are able.

The Sri Maha Sakthi Mohambigai Amman temple unique is its location. The 100-year-old place of worship is in the midst of the busy Mid Valley Mega Mall. The temple is guarded by two imposing figures that stand at the temple's entrance. The two giant statues, known as bhootangals, are guardians of the temple. Apart from the statues, there is a Bodhi tree with a statue of a meditating Buddha under it. These are accompanied by sculptures of Hindu and Chinese gods, along with some spiritual masters. The temple's distinctive architecture incorporates figurines of religious gurus like Shiridi Baba, Guru Nanak, Valmiki and Buddha all around the walls. The temple had undergone the Maha Kumbhabishegam (consecration) ceremony in 2002 and is popular with locals and foreign tourists. It is dedicated to goddess Mohambigai, a combination of Hindu goddess Parvathy, Saraswathy and Laxmi, representing power, knowledge and fortune respectively.

Churches, Temples & Mosques: Masjid Jamek
  • Tip Rating:
  • Probably the most attractive mosque in town is the Masjid Jamek, which is located in the colonial district. Located at the fork of the two rivers that flow through the city, it does make for an attractive setting for this striking white mosque. Easy to find... There are stops on both the Star and Putra LRT lines nearby... (of the same name, Masjid Jamek, conveniently enough...)
