    Begin your journey at Merdeka Square. It was at the Padang Kelab Selangor (Royal Selangor Club) that Merdeka (independence) was proclaimed at midnight August 1957. At its southern end stands the tallest flagpole in the world, proud of the nation. Beneath the square is Plaza putra which contains a theatre (The Actor's Studio and a cinema), food court, restaurants and souvenir shop. Also alocate the Tourist Info Centre. Check out what are the latest activities around town and get all the information about Malaysia here. Sign the guestbook to mark that you are now in Kuala Lumpur. How cool ya! Next destination, to the Historical Museum and around the area, just opposite the Square. If you guys still remember, this is the place back in 1998 where Anwar Ibrahim's (former Deputy Prime Minister) supporters held their demonstration against Mahathir. At that time, I was in the college and still remember how me and my friends got trapped together with them and been waterbomb by the police. Lucky us we showed them our student tag and they escort us to the backlane of the High Court. Pheww!!

    Dataran Merdeka, or Independence Square, is "an immaculately turfed 8.2-hectare area" featuring a 100-m high flag pole. The flag pole marks the spot where the Malayan flag was first hoisted in 1957, when the country became free from British rule. At the other end of the square are water fountains and flower beds, a nice spot for a rest.

    I came here as early as 7:30am. The place seemed very quiet and tranquil, no other travelers around yet except me… :-)… Here, I was delighted at the sight of flowers in different colors with the fountain beside it. The huge green field where the tallest flagpole in the world stands is very refreshing and provides a cooling effect to tired eyes. This is the place where Malaysia’s independence was declared.

    Just across the street from the Sultan Abdul Samad Building, you can see the Merdeka Square. In 31 Aug 1957, on the 100 meter pole is where the Malaysian flag is hoisted up signifying Independence Day from the British rule.

    Merdeka Square Day and Night Scene. Best in the evening and walking distance from China Town in Kuala Lumpur. Every year in 31st August, Malaysia celebrates independance day ! Last year 2007 celebrate 50th years. Nice experience.
