Merdeka Square or Independence Square was where the Union flag was lowered and our National flag was raised for the first time at midnight on 31 August 1957. The other places where our Declaration of Independence was read together with the raising of our National flag are the Esplanade in Penang (my hometown) and Melaka. There is a 100m flag pole on the square with a giagantic National flag. It used to be the tallest flag pole in the world (though I'm not really into superlative monuments). It's just a fact. The square is fronted by the Moorish Sultan Abdul Samad Building (see its own page) and the cricket green and the Royal Selangor Club (built in the Tudor style). This historic square is really worth going to as there are many other attractions nearby; Tunku Abdul Rahman Memorial Library, St Mary the Virgin Anglican Cathedral. It's also the place where we hold our colourful National Day parade (31 August) on alternate years when it's KL turn to host the parade; on other years, the Federal Government will choose another place to celebrate our National/Merdeka Day. The cultural showcase month, Citrawarna sometime in October is also launched there every year.

    Merdeka Square: Merdeka Square
Merdeka is the Malay word for independence. Merdeka Square commemorates the historic event that occurred here, at the stroke of midnight on 31 August 1957 when the Union Jack was lowered for the last time, and Malaya became an independent nation. From there u can see Sultan Abdul Samad Building, National History Museum and. Kuala Lumpur Memorial Library.

Merdeka Square: Look for other Neo-Mauresque buildings
The Malaysian Handycraft Development Society (At the convergence of Jalan Sultan Hishamuddin and Jalan Raja) is another great example of Victorian-Moorish architecture on the Padang. The building hosts an exhibition of local crafts that can be purchased by the visitors.

This is by no mean the largest square in the world. But it reflects Malaysia and its past. 'Merdeka' means independence in Malay language. While at the square, your eyes would first caught on the beautiful Sultan Abdul Samad building that has a clock tower as the old symbol of KL. Then you see a green field that used to be the cricket field back in the british colonial days. Next to the field, is the Royal Selangor Club. This is a club for the rich and famous. When you look up, you will see this 100m high flag pole. It is one of the tallest flag pole in the world. When the wind blows the flag, it is one good looking snapshot. Around the squares you can also find National History Museum, Kuala Lumpur Memorial Library and St. Mary's Cathedral .

    Merdeka Square: Merdeka Square
This scene could be in England somewhere, it resembles a cricket pitch and is a relic from Malaysia's colonial past. Malaysia is proud of its independence and has a special square to commemorate this important event.

    Merdeka Square: Dataran Merdeka.
This was formerly known as the Selangor Club Padang where the colonial Brits used to play cricket and have their afternoon teas at the merry old England tudors styled Selangor Club building. It was on the Dataran Merdeka that at 12:01 am on August 31, 1957, the Union Jack was lowered and the Malayan flag hoisted, signaling Malaysia's independence as a nation. Today, a 100-meter flagpole, one of the tallest in the world, marks this spot. Funny enough beneath the Dataran Merdeka is the Plaza Putra, an underground food, leisure, and entertainment complex,
