National Monument: sentiments for Malaysia's classic Anthem
  • Tip Rating:
  • As a child, I've always been in awe at this monument everytime I see it in Malaysia's anthem 'Negaraku' at the start of the TV (RTM) schedule.

Negaraku (Malay for 'My Country') is based on the state anthem of Perak state, which in turn takes its melody from an old Malay song, Terang Bulan, that was popular in the 1930s in Malaya. Negaraku has been the country's national anthem since it gained independence in 1957. Sadly, there has been recent suggestions to change the anthem. I dearly hope my childhood memories of Malaysia won't disappear...
