Don't go to the National Museum in 2007

by yukisanto Written Feb 5, 2007

If you're visiting KL for the year of 2007, you can forget about visiting the national museum (Muzium Negara). It's been closed for redevelopment for the entire year. Of course it's still open, but 3/4 of its galleries have been closed, so you don't really see much. Unless you're interested only in the Cultural gallery and the Faces of Malaysia gallery, where you learn more about the different ethnic groups of Malaysia. The interesting sections on natural history (where you see real animals which are dead and have been preserved and stuffed), ceramic display, weapons and musical instruments are closed.

Cost: RM2.00 Opens daily from 9am-6pm except for Hari Raya Haji and first day of Hari Raya Aidilfitri.

The National Museum has a number of fascinating displays on Malay/Malaysian culture as well as other parts of SE Asia. The present building was built in 1963 to resemble a Malay palace. The museum was later extended in the 1990s to include a library, an auditorium and an additional exhibition hall for thematic exhibitions. The entrance fee was 2 RM (2001).

We spent an hour or so at the National Museum. As far as museums go it wasn't the biggest or the best but it was a great way to learn about the Malaysian culture. I especially enjoyed the illustrations of the different faces of Kuala Lumpur. The diagrams showed the characteristics of an ethnic group and its origins. It made me much more away of the people around me. Outside you will find some of the automobiles used in the early days. There is also a stilt house that you can go inside and take a look at how people lived.

    Admission:RM1

    Open Hours: 9am-6pm daily.

The National Museum looks promising from the outside, however, once inside, it is a bit limited. As is customary in Malaysia, much is made of the three distinct cultures that have had an impact on the country, and there are dioramas of different cultures and cultural practices.

Curiously enough, for a place that so thoroughly embraces its multicultural heritage, the mannequins in the exhibit all seem to look very Western, Anglo even....

It's not a bad way to learn a few things about the country, and it provides a good respite from the heat.

The National Museum provides an in-depth look at the diversity of Malaysia’s cultures from both the people and natural aspects. Several collections show the variety of people, the dresses, traditions and their heritage that comprises of the modern state of Malaysia today.
Other parts of the collection included pottery, musical instruments and weapons.
The natural part of the museum is also interesting since one can learn about the vast natural diversity of this country.
On occasions the museum houses speciality displays of both international and local nature.

The building is very classic and beautiful but unfortunately the collection of the displays is not very rich. Anyway, it's interesting to learn about Malaysian history especially pre-history there.
